Inside the 9585 (67kb)
General information Machine type: 9585 Announce date: October, 1992
Excerpt from the original announcement letter;
The IBM PS/2 Server 85 (9585-0X6, -0XA, -0XF) systems are powerful, floor-standing computers that combine processor performance, large data storage capacities, and enhanced system expandability. These systems are specifically designed to support the demand of network servers, multi-user host and advanced business and technical applications. Featured with these new systems are three models offering either a 104 Million Byte (MB), 212 Million Byte (MB) or 400 Million Byte (MB) hard disk, a 2.88MB diskette drive and 8MB of 70ns parity memory that is expandable to 64MB on the system board. The standard SVGA Display Adapter, when used in conjunction with IBM's newly announced 95XX Colour Displays, is designed to provide International Organization for Standardization (ISO) capable enhanced ergonomic benefits in the form of reduced screen flicker at VGA resolution and 256 colours. The IBM PS/2 Server 85 models feature a unique system board design that contains a 486SX-33MHz microprocessor. For customers who require floating point processing or additional processing power, a second microprocessor socket is provided for the installation of IBM PS/2 486-33/66 Microprocessor Upgrade Option, the newly announced double-clocked microprocessor option that operates externally at 33MHz and internally at 66MHz. The advanced capabilities of IBM's Microchannel architecture is exploited in these new models with enhanced performance functions that include 32-bit DMA, Vital Product Data, System Control Block and 40MB/s Data Streaming. Also integrated on the system board are the electronic modules to support the standard enhanced SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) with Cache. All IBM Server 85 systems will be shipped by IBM with OS/2 and will include a mouse at no additional charge.
