(You can download a free copy from http://www.java.sun.com/products/hotspot/1.0/download.html) PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SOFTCOPY READER WILL NOT RUN IF THE ABOVE TWO ITEMS ARE NOT PRESENT OR PROPERLY INSTALLED ON YOUR SYSTEM. Hardware Prerequisites ---------------------- o An Intel Pentium or compatible processor with minimum 16Mb RAM and a minimum of 3Mb free disk space o Any system compatible display o A pointing device o A CD-ROM drive (optional, for installation) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEFORE YOU INSTALL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before you begin your installation, make sure that you have Java version 1.2.2 and the Hotspot Performance Engine version 1.0.1. If you have Java installed on your machine but are unsure of the version, type java -version at the dos prompt, and the following output should be generated: java version "1.2.2" HotSpot VM (1.0.1, mixed mode, build g) NOTE: if you get a "Bad command or file name" message instead, you may need to add the java runtime environment to your PATH variable. NOTE: IBM Softcopy Reader for Java may work with later versions of Java and the Hotspot VM, but as of the time of this writing, no later versions have been available, and therefore the product has not been tested with such. If you do not have Java or have the incorrect version, you may download a free copy of Java Runtime Environment and the Hotspot VM from the Sun Microsystems, Inc. website at Java Runtime environment 1.2.2: http://www.java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/jre/download-windows.html Hotspot Performance Engine Version 1.0.1: http://www.java.sun.com/products/hotspot/1.0/download.html) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION OF THE SOFTCOPY READER -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Run java_reader.exe -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RUNNING THE PROGRAM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. To run the Book Reader choose Start->Programs->Softcopy Reader for Java->Book Reader 2. To run the Bookshelf Organizer choose Start->Programs->Softcopy Reader for Java->Bookshelf Organizer Please note that you can also open books in the Book Reader from within the Bookshelf Organizer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONFIGURATION -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first time that either the Bookshelf Organizer or the Softcopy Reader is run, a dialog will appear allowing selection of default locations for books/bookshelves and notes. Navigate through the directory tree, highlight the desired paths and add them to either the book/bookshelf directory list or the notes directory list. NOTE: At least one directory must be specified in each list. The directories for notes must have write permission (e.g. not a directory on a CD). As a default, the program will add the current working directory to both Book and Notes directories. You may later remove it, if desired, after adding additional paths. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNINSTALLING -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To uninstall, use "Add/Remove Programs" from the Control Panel of Windows. NOTE: If you have created any bookshelf (*.BKS) or notes (*.NTF) files in the directory where the Softcopy Reader is installed (or its subdirectories), you should backup these files to a different location before uninstalling. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VERSION NOTES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) This is a Beta version 2.3 of the Softcopy Reader and Bookshelf Organizer. 2) If you are familiar with the BookManager family of products, you may notice several new features in the Softcopy Reader and Bookshelf Organizer for Java, including: + A redesigned interface for the Bookshelf Organizer, + Cut, copy and paste operations for moving and copying books from one shelf to another, + Filtering capability on lists of bookshelves and books, + Capability for deleting bookshelf files, + Exact search capability on bookshelves, + Consolidated interfaces for searching and working with notes, + Back and Forward buttons for more convenient navigation through books, + HTML tables support, + Option for scaling inline images. 3) Some features are still unavailable in this Beta version, including: + Automatic creation of bookshelf indexes in the Bookshelf Organizer. + Customization of fonts and colors.
