Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION In the telecommunications environment, digital technology is rapidly replacing the conventional analog methods for transmission of voice, data and image. The Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) uses digital technology for simultaneous transmission of voice, data and image through standard interfaces over a single telephone line served by digital switches. The Basic Rate ISDN (BRI) provides two B channels for transmission of digitized voice or data at speeds up to 64Kbps and a D channel for transmission of signalling information at 16Kbps. The IBM WaveRunner Digital Modem is an adapter that provides basic rate connectivity to personal computers for communications over an ISDN network. Unique to the design of the adapter is its ability to communicate through ISDN with devices such as PCs and fax machines attached to an existing analog telephone line via modems. This functionality allows end-users to have a mix of devices distributed over ISDN and analog lines, while maintaining the ability to communicate from devices attached to an ISDN line with those on an analog line. The adapter also supports many existing, widely used modem application programs at speeds up to 64Kbps over ISDN, and up to 14.4Kbps (without using compression) on analog modems. FUNCTIONS: The WaveRunner Digital Modem supports: o S/T ISDN Basic Rate Interface - One B channel at speeds up to 64Kbps, and a D channel at 16Kbps - Extendable to two B channels per the STATEMENT OF DIRECTION section in this announcement - Passive Bus o COM Port Type I and Type II serial port emulation -- Permits use of existing PC modem communications software over ISDN o Modem Emulation -- Permits PCs attached to an ISDN to communicate with devices such as PCs, FAX machines attached to an existing analog telephone network o Data Compression -- Provides a 2:1 compression for a significant increase in throughput by using MNP 4/5 (*), data compression on modems o FAX Emulation -- Enables PCs to exchange standard Group 3 facsimile data with Fax machines connected to an existing analog telephone network, when the WaveRunner is used in conjunction with the Trio DataFAX Lite application program that is shipped with the adapter. o Hayes (**) AT (R) Command set -- "AT" command sequences are accepted and executed o TCP/IP applications -- With the TCP/IP Protocol Stack installed a wide range of TCP/IP applications will be supported via: - RFC 1294 over ISDN - Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) - IP packets over ISDN. o Rate Adaptation: - Allows V.120 encapsulation of Async data - Permits interoperability with ISDN/Async Terminal adapters (*) MNP is a registered trademark of Microcom, Inc. COST ADVANTAGE With the continuing rapid deployment of ISDN services at low tariffs, the WaveRunner Digital Modem lets end users take advantage of these services for: Line consolidation: o ISDN provides connectivity to a variety of communication equipment over a single link, eliminating the need for separate lines for each type of equipment. For example, using the WaveRunner a personal computer, an ISDN telephone and an ISDN FAX machine can be connected to a single ISDN line, thus eliminating the need for three separate phone lines. Less connect time: o ISDN's speed and reliability also reduces the costs by requiring less connect time per transmission. o Unused bandwidth elimination: ISDN when used as an alternative to a dedicated (leased) backup high-speed link, will result in significant line cost savings. INTEGRATION OF BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The WaveRunner provides the flexibility of communications between devices attached to an ISDN, and an existing telephone network. Thus, an establishment/enterprise can have a mix of devices distributed over ISDN and analog lines, and still maintain communications between devices attached to both of these as if they are all on a single network. QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS WaveRunner provides connectivity to ISDN services using digital technology. This method of transmission has been proven over time to be highly reliable and superior in quality over other methods of transmission. CONNECTIVITY IMPROVEMENTS As customers migrate part of their networks to ISDN, WaveRunner offers connectivity for devices that are on ISDN for communications with those on an existing telephone network, thus enabling customers to gradually grow their networks to the desired environment to meet their business needs. ACCESS TO ENTERPRISE DATA WaveRunner provides ISDN connectivity to stand-alone workstations for communications with other remote devices on an establishment/ enterprise network, which may be either an ISDN or an existing analog telephone network, thus making it possible for the stand-alone workstations to access establishment/enterprise data. PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT WaveRunner enables many existing, widely used modem application programs to run at speeds up to 64Kbps over ISDN, and this results in faster response times contributing to significant improvements in productivity. SOFTWARE UPGRADES WaveRunner's functionality can be enhanced via new software upgrades as they become available and this ensures customer's investment protection. PRODUCT POSITIONING The WaveRunner Digital Modem provides a digital connection to personal computers for communications over an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) with other devices attached to the same network, or an existing analog telephone network via modems. The product enables customers to migrate all or part of their networks to ISDN in stages. Thus, customers can take advantage of ISDN services only on parts of their network while maintaining continuity in communications between all the devices on an establishment/enterprise network, parts of which could be an existing analog telephone network. STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION IBM intends to enhance the functionality of the WaveRunner Digital Modem via a software release. These enhancements include support for: o The second B channel, extending the ISDN capability to 2B + D, with B channel BONDING o Voice calls to Headset/Handset o NDIS/GCCI Interface -- NDIS provides an application programming interface that conforms to industry standard Network Driver Interface Specifications (NDIS) and GCCI provides a Generic Call Control Interface.
