IBM PS/2 MICROCHANNEL TO MAINFRAME CONNECTION Contents Announcement Letter Number 192-156 dated June 30, 1992 US - Last Revised on June 30, 1992 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM PS/2 (R) MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection, when used with appropriate software, enables the customer to connect an IBM Micro Channel (R) PS/2 directly to a System/370 (TM), System/390 (TM), ES/3090 (TM), or ES/9000 (TM) channel running in block-multiplexer mode. Since no communications protocol is involved, the transfer of data between the two systems can be up to 4.5 megabytes (MB) per second. Attachment to ESCON (TM) channels is supported via the IBM 9034 ESCON Converter Model 1. This adapter replaces the IBM PS/2 System/370 Channel Adapter (RPQ #8P1456). Planned Availability Date: July 3, 1992. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Connects an IBM Micro Channel PS/2 to a System/370, System/390, ES/3090, or ES/9000 channel running in block-multiplexer mode. o This direct attachment supports a data transfer rate between the two systems of up to 4.5MB per second. o Intelligent adapter with onboard microprocessor and data buffers. o Up to two MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection adapters may be installed in a single PS/2 computer. o Up to three MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection adapters can be "daisy-chained" on the same host system channel. DESCRIPTION USER PRODUCTIVITY By allowing workstation users access to mainframe-based services, large quantities of data can be processed more efficiently and then shared among workstation end users. Mainframe users also have high-speed access to workstation and local area network (LAN) data. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS With appropriate application software running in both the host system and the PS/2 workstation, LAN users are provided high-speed transparent access to mainframe resources and services. By allowing workstation users access to mainframe-based services, large quantities of data can be processed more efficiently and then shared among workstation end users. When used with Optical Media Attach, the MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection provides mainframe users with high-speed access to data distributed on CD-ROM, and read/write access to workstation data on rewritable optical media, hard disk, and LAN-attached hard disk. GROWTH ENABLEMENT When used in conjunction with LANRES/VM or LANRES/MVS, for example, mainframe storage may be used to relieve the capacity constraints of workstation-based servers. LANRES/VM provides functions that allow workstation users access to high-volume system printers, thus alleviating printer bottlenecks on the LAN. The Optical Media Attach software provides key elements necessary for development of applications which access PS/2 files from both workstation and the mainframe environments. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT The Extended Operations Console Facility improves operations management through a high degree of flexibility in the configuration of operator workstations, thus reducing the complexity of an operations site. LANRES/VM provides the security and protection associated with a mainframe system, and simplifies management of multiple LAN environments by centralizing LAN administration at the mainframe. PRODUCT POSITIONING The IBM MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection adapter and cables support IBM LANRES/VM, IBM LANRES/MVS, IBM System/370 and System/390 Optical Media Attach/2, Extended Operator Console Facility/2, VSE-PS/2 Data Exchange Program Release 2, and Workstation LAN File Services/VM. This hardware, in combination with the above-listed software applications, will provide IBM customers with direct connection of Micro Channel PS/2 computers to System/370, System/390, ES/3090, and ES/9000 channels running in block-multiplexer mode. LIMITATIONS: o Up to two MMC adapters may be installed in a single PS/2. o Up to three MMC adapters can be "daisy-chained" on the same host system internal channel. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: Extension cables have been developed to complement the office and business professional installation requirements of the supporting applications. While completely compatible with existing bus and tag cables, this new design combines individual bus and tag cables into one single cable of approximately 1/2-inch diameter, as compared to the one-inch diameter of each separate cable. This new size means that the cables are more flexible and provide a three-inch bend radius versus a four-foot bend radius for current cables. These cables should be considered when installation is not in a raised-floor environment. CABLE ORDERS: Upstream Bus and Tag Cable (12G7988): Cable part number 12G7988 must be ordered and installed concurrently with the MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection. This cable translates the bus and tag serpent connector coming from the channel to the 78-pin internal channel cable standard. After this cable is installed, up to three MMC adapters can be "daisy-chained" on the same internal channel. If an MMC adapter is the last control unit on the OEMI channel, then the internal channel terminator block supplied with this cable is used to terminate the chain. If the last control unit on the OEMI channel is not an MMC adapter, then a Downstream Bus and Tag Cable (12G7993) must be used to connect the last adapter to a downstream control unit. Cable 12G7988 is to be ordered once per channel. Extension Cables: The following cables are available to attach the MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection Adapter to the processor OEMI channel: PART NO. LENGTH 12G7989 10 feet (3.05 meters) 12G7990 25 feet (7.60 meters) 12G7991 40 feet (12.20 meters) 12G7992 100 feet (35.50 meters) These cables go from 78-pin male to 78-pin female and are intended to provide flexibility when attaching the MMC adapter on the channel. They are used to provide the distance between "daisy-chained" control units. Downstream Bus and Tag Cable (12G7993): This cable translates the 78-pin internal channel cable back to the serpent bus and tag connectors. NOTE: The IBM PS/2 MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection is a customer-setup product. It is recommended that an IBM service representative attach any cables to the host system channel.
