The Video I/O adapter comprises two cards: A base Micro Channel feature card that provides video in and video out A guest card that provides hardware-assisted video data compression or decompression The Video I/O adapter requires only one Micro Channel slot when the base card and guest cards are installed. The Ultimedia Video I/O adapter provides support for numerous multimedia applications requiring video, including: Still or full motion video NTSC or PAL video standards YUV or RGB color A variety of image sizes is supported in the video capture mode and one busmaster DMA channel is offered to enhance system throughput. Another benefit is the savings realized through the use of the compression and decompression algorithm provided on the guest card. The guest card offers considerable assistance in transporting video data internally in the system or across the network, as only the compressed data need be sent. The compression algorithm supported in hardware is a universal video compression/decompression format, M-JPEG. The compression/decompression hardware is fully programmable to allow selection of the desired compression level. The Ultimedia Video I/O adapter provides the required support for applications such as multimedia-enabled training, authoring, desktop publishing, still or live video collaboration, and video distribution. Details of Supported Functions Video Formats Supported: Analog Video In: NTSC, PAL or S-video Analog Video Out: NTSC, PAL or S-video Digital Video: YUV 4:2:2 (16-bit) RGB (8-bit) RGB (24-bit) Base Card Functions (#2404): The Ultimedia Video I/O Base Adapter directly supports several programmable functions and also provides system level interface for the guest compression/decompression card. Functions provided on the base card include: Analog to digital conversion with video capture support Digital to analog conversion with video out support Selectable color space conversion for video in Monitoring of incoming video images with a supported IBM graphics adapter and/or an external video monitor Scaling the size of the incoming video image DMA transfer of the digital image data to and from the card Video Capture: The adapter provides video capture on a frame-by-frame (field-by-field) basis of "live" video from a single source. Selection of S-video or CVBS input formats is enabled. The captured video is converted from NTSC (PAL) to YUV. The YUV digital video can be converted to 24-bit RGB, 8-bit dithered RGB, or remain unchanged. Video Output: The base adapter supports transfer of digital YUV (4-2-2 16-bit) data. Through the guest card, both digital YUV and compressed M-JPEG data are supported from the system to be output as PAL or NTSC in both S-video or CVBS format. The Video I/O adapter accepts input from the system as 320 x 240 or 640 x 240 pixel fields, which are output as full-size NTSC (640 x 480) images to a display or recorder. Similarly, PAL images are output as 768 x 576 pixel images from 384 x 288 or 768 x 288 pixel input fields. M-JPEG format is accepted from the system in the same field sizes as above, an output as full-size NTSC or PAL images, if the compression/decompression card is used. Scaling: Captured video input can be scaled down from a maximum NTSC or PAL resolution (640 x 480, 768 x 576) in even increments to the minimum resolution desired. Video Monitoring: Monitoring of incoming video data is supported with a graphics adapter and/or a video monitor supported by IBM. The image sizes shown in table #1 are supported for viewing with a supported graphics adapter. Table #1 Video Monitoring With a Supported Graphics Adapter: .------------------------------------------. | 8-Bit Dithered Mode Selected on | | Graphics Adapter and Video I/O | |--------------+-------------+-------------| | NTSC Source | | PAL Source | |--------------+-------------+-------------| | 640 X 480 | FULL SIZE | 768 X 576 | | 320 X 240 | CIF SIZE | 384 X 288 | | 160 X 120 | QCIF SIZE | 192 X 144 | |--------------+-------------+-------------| | 24-Bit RGB Mode Selected on | | Graphics Adapter and Video I/O | |------------------------------------------| | NTSC Source PAL Source | |--------------+-------------+-------------| | 320 X 240 | CIF SIZE | 384 X 288 | | 160 X 120 | QSIF SIZE | 192 X 144 | '--------------+-------------+-------------' Compression/Decompression Guest Card (FC2405): Video compression/decompression is supported with the M-JPEG algorithm in either the compression or decompression mode. This card supports full-motion video capture and video out utilizing functions provided by the base video card. Video monitoring concurrent with M-JPEG compression is supported. When compression is required, the quality of compressed information is provided by the user through a software interface, whereas the decompressed file sent to the adapter contains the necessary information for software to automatically interpret the necessary command and control information. Video out images can be accepted as either full-size NTSC or PAL or CIF-size NTSC or PAL from the system. Scaling of CIF size images to full-size NTSC, PAL, or S-video images for video out is featured through support on the base card. The Video I/O adapter supports M-JPEG compression and capture of video in to CIF or full-size frames with concurrent monitoring of the video. The video can be viewed in an X-window, 8-bit dithered or 24-bit RGB, on a supported graphics adapter at CIF size 320 x 240 for NTSC or 384 x 288 for PAL. External Connections: Four external connectors are provided for: Video in S-VHS mini-din jack C-VBS RCA-type jack Video out S-VHS mini-din jack C-VBS RCA-type jack System Interface: The Video I/O adapter card functions as a 32-bit Micro Channel bus master that accepts streaming data and address in 32-bit widths. Parity checking is enabled on both address and data lines. Programmable Option Select (POS) is provided for software initialization. Cabling: No cabling is supplied with the Video I/O adapter. PRODUCT POSITIONING IBM Ultimedia Video I/O Adapter IBM Ultimedia Video I/O adapter for the RISC System/6000 provides a multimedia base component for POWERstations and POWERservers. The Video I/O is designed to provide a basis for supporting a wide range of multimedia applications in our current business environment. The IBM Ultimedia Video I/O adapter for the RISC System/6000 should be marketed in place of the M-Video Capture Adapter (#2400). The Ultimedia Video I/O adapter offers superior features and performance to those found in the M-Video Capture adapter. IBM Ultimedia Audio Adapter Select To provide access to new applications available on RISC System/6000 workstations, select the Ultimedia Audio Adapter no charge select for new installations and Ultimedia Services software. POWER GXT155L The POWER GXT155L is a low-cost, 2D adapter that provides enhanced performance for the Softgraphics implementation of 3D OpenGL API. Based on the same technology as the POWER GXT150L, it is available for RISC System/6000 Models 41W and 41T and can be ordered as a select up from the GXT150L. Enhanced GXT155L provides wireframe performance for OpenGL, which is nearly twice as fast as the GXT150L and shading performance, which is approximately 20% faster. Although OpenGL application performance will vary, based on Viewperf benchmark results, applications should be benchmarked on the target system to determine actual application performance before making a final adapter recommendation. The POWER GXT155L also provides support for softgraphics implementation of the PHIGS and PEX 3D APIs as well as the X-Window System; however, benchmark performance of these APIs is similar to that of the lower-priced POWER GXT150L adapter standard on models 41W and 41T.
