IBM RISC SYSTEM/6000 POWERSTATION M20 AND M2A Contents Announcement Letter Number 193-016 dated February 2, 1993 US - Last Revised on February 2, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM RISC System/6000 (R) POWERstation (TM) M20 and POWERstation M2A (Southern Hemisphere only) are entry-level, desktop graphics workstations. Each system features an integrated, 17-inch color monitor, standard keyboard and mouse, and a 33MHz processor. Each can be configured as either a diskless, dataless, or -- with attachment of an external SCSI device -- local area network (LAN)-attached diskfull workstation. Both systems are designed to be binary compatible with the RISC System/6000 POWERstation and POWERserver (TM) family of systems, and feature a single chip implementation of the RISC System/6000 POWER* Architecture. Combining the convenience and ease-of-installation of an integrated solution, the POWERstation M20 and M2A systems include Distributed Service License Option (DSLO) licenses for both AIX (R) for RISC System/6000 Version 3.2 operating system and AIXwindows (R) Environment/6000 Version 1.2 (two-dimensional (2D) Base). POWERstation M20 and M2A feature a high-performance, single-chip processor for compute-intensive applications, as well as an integrated SCSI controller and integrated Ethernet adapter, providing the ease-of-installation and user productivity of a preconfigured system. For comparative purposes, the POWERstation M20 and M2A offer graphics function and performance comparable to that of the POWER Gt1 adapter on POWERstation/POWERserver 220 series machines -- the only exception being that the POWERstation M20 and M2A support a single, integrated display included with each system. Memory capacity of up to 64MB (16MB is standard), coupled with supported input/output devices and communications features, provide the customer with other configuration options for a powerful, LAN-dependent POWERstation. The POWERstation M20 and M2A desktop workstations utilize IBM's POWER Architecture (TM) and, together with IBM AIX for RISC System/6000 Version 3.2.3, maintain binary compatibility with the IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver family of systems; moreover, both systems maintain application portability and high throughput levels for greater productivity and performance. Finally, both systems conform to open systems standards--a key factor for enabling customers to develop and port applications across environments. ENABLE CUSTOMER'S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE: The IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 and M2A are designed to meet customer needs for an entry-level, diskless workstation with an integrated graphics display -- all at a very competitive price. CONNECTIVITY AND GROWTH OPTIONS The POWERstation M20 and M2A are designed to grow with the customer's entry-level requirements. The standard 16MB of memory can be increased up to 64MB: six additional memory SIMM slots are available to yield 64MB of total memory (using eight 8MB PS/2 (R) Memory SIMM's). One integrated SCSI controller for attaching external devices and one integrated Ethernet adapter allow the user to have additional I/O and communications devices without utilizing the available Micro Channel slot. The Micro Channel feature card slot is available for additional communications adapters. NOTE: 1. MB is 1,048,576 bytes (two to the twentieth power) when referring to memory; in all other cases it is 1,000,000 (ten to the sixth power). 2. GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (two to the thirtieth power) when referring to memory; in all other cases it is 1,000,000,000 (ten to the ninth power). CONNECTIVITY: The RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 and M2A offer a powerful, LAN-based graphics workstation, coupled with supported I/O and communications devices, for flexibility in creating unique customer solutions. OPEN SYSTEMS ARCHITECTURE The POWERstation M20 and M2A help protect a customer's investment in RISC System/6000 hardware and software by maintaining binary compatibility with all RISC System/6000 systems. Both systems extend IBM's commitment to open systems architecture to the desktop graphics workstation market, offering support for AIXwindows Environment/6000 (based on the Open Software Foundation's OSF/Motif (1) graphics user interface). Together with AIX Version 3.2.3, the POWERstation M20 and M2A offer interoperability with other IBM and vendor host systems, as well. (1) OSF/Motif is a trademark of Open Software Foundation STRATEGIC ARCHITECTURES -- INDUSTRY STANDARDS: The RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 and M2A provide binary compatibility with the entire RISC System/6000 family of systems and, together with AIX Version 3.2.3, offer interoperability with other IBM and vendor host systems. FLEXIBLE CONFIGURATIONS The POWERstation M20 and M2A are designed to provide a low-priced diskless system with added flexibility for the desktop graphics workstation market. Taking advantage of the integrated SCSI and Ethernet function of the POWERstation M20 and M2A, customers can design I/O configurations to fit their own unique requirements without sacrificing the ease of installation of a 'preconfigured' graphics system. The POWERstation M20 and M2A -- with their single chip, 33MHz processor -- offer high performance at a very attractive price for the graphics workstation market. Both systems provide support for system installation and management facility via the operating system, and both provide support for System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) processes, including software installation and configuration, device configuration, problem determination, and storage management. Moreover, POWERstation M20 and M2A support AIXwindows Environment/6000 (based on the versatile OSF/Motif graphics user interface), which can boost productivity by providing an easy-to-manipulate iconographic view of the AIX file system. Support for InfoExplorer (TM) helps maintain high productivity, providing users flexible access to online documentation using task index, hypertext jump points and search features. APPLICATION DEVELOPER PRODUCTIVITY: The IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 and M2A are designed to offer the ease of installability of a preconfigured graphics workstation with the added flexibility of a larger system, including an integrated SCSI controller and Ethernet adapter, enabling a customer to create unique configurations to maximize productivity. Configured as a client, the POWERstation M20 is dependent on a LAN-attached AIX host system for data and program storage. Configured as a LAN-attached diskfull workstation with an external SCSI drive attached, the POWERstation M20 delivers powerful graphics functionality with optional LAN and communication capabilities. OPTIONAL SERVICE AIDS The POWERstation M20 and M2A models offer flexibility in ordering service aids, allowing customers to decide whether or not they require copies of service publications or wrap plugs for diagnostic testing. For an additional charge, customers may order the Service Publications and Wrap Plugs Kit (feature number 3750) and receive the following publications to assist their in-house service specialists: o IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation and POWERserver Common Diagnostics and Service Guide (SA23-2687) o IBM RISC System/6000 7008 POWERstation Service Guide (SA23-2683). Wrap plugs are also included in the kit for testing connectors to the POWERstation M20 and M2A system units. PRODUCT POSITIONING IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 and M2A offer a lower-cost integrated graphics solution for the desktop market, and is recommended in market segments where price is a critical factor. The POWERstation M20 and M2A provide graphics function and performance comparable to the POWER Gt1 adapter on a POWERstation/POWERserver 220 series machine. IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 and M2A, with their single-element packaging, are well suited to environments where space is a consideration, in particular for use as trader workstations, platform workstations, customer service workstations, telesales workstations, or laboratory or plant floor workstations. With their medialess design, IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 and M2A are also good candidates whenever data security is important. Configured as a LAN-attached diskfull workstation with an external disk attached, the IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 and M2A is an inexpensive graphics workstation, and should be considered when price is a primary factor. SOFTWARE LICENSING REQUIREMENTS The initial purchase price of the RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 or M2A includes Distributed System License Option (DSLO) licenses for the following software program products: o AIX for RISC System/6000 Version 3.2 (1-2 users, D5 processor group) o AIXwindows Environment/6000 Version 1.2 (1-2 users). Even though the price of the POWERstation M20 and M2A includes DSLO licenses for AIX/6000 (TM) Version 3.2 and AIXwindows Environment/6000 Version 1.2 (2D Base), a separate software order must be placed for both software products for registration purposes. In summary, customers who wish to order the POWERstation M20 or M2A will need to place orders for BOTH hardware and software products (software for registration only). NOTES: 1. At least one basic license per enterprise for both IBM AIX for RISC System/6000 Version 3.2.3 and AIXwindows Environment/6000 Version 1.2 is required as a prerequisite to the DSLO licenses; thus, if the POWERstation M20 or M2A is to be the only system within an enterprise, the customer should place a separate software order for basic licenses for both software products. 2. An option to upgrade from a DSLO license to a basic license is provided during the initial hardware order. COMPATIBILITY: IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation M20 and M2A are binary compatible with all RISC System/6000 systems running IBM AIX for RISC System/6000 Version 3.2.3.
