IBM RISC SYSTEM/6000 POWERSERVER 970 AND 970E Contents Announcement Letter Number 192-090 dated April 21, 1992 US - Last Revised on April 21, 1992 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The RISC System/6000 (TM) POWERserver 970 (7015) is the new high-performance 19-inch rack-mounted member of the RISC System/6000 family. The POWERserver 970 is a multi-user, multitasking, numeric- and transaction-intensive computing system employing IBM's POWER Architecture and utilizing AIX (R) Version 3 for RISC System/6000 operating system software. The POWERserver 970 incorporates IBM's new .5-Micron four-level metalization CMOS technology, which allows quadrupling of the on-chip instruction cache to 32KB and delivers higher performance. Major enhancements to the I/O bus architecture and a doubling of the speed to 80MB/sec increase the I/O performance of the system compared to previous POWERserver systems. The POWERserver 970 also provides an integrated SCSI port and supports an option of an additional eight, full-function I/O slots for a total of 16 Micro Channel (R) card slots. These improvements, combined with an enhanced, high-performance 50MHz processor, create a high-performance system for commercial transaction processing and file serving applications. The base fixed disk storage capacity of POWERserver 970 is 2.7GB (2 x 1.37 GB Drives). With the attachment of the new, higher performance disk subsystems also announced today, the disk storage performance and capacity of the POWERserver systems are increased dramatically. Also announced are field-installable model conversions for customers with POWERserver 930, 950 and 950E systems installed. These model conversions allow customers to take advantage of the I/O enhancements provided by the POWERserver 970 and protect their investment in previous POWERserver systems. Planned Availability Date: June 26, 1992 (includes 970E MES availability). (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Enhanced processor performance to 50MHz operation, coupled with a four-times-larger instruction cache, improves commercial and engineering/scientific application performance. o Higher performance dual Micro Channels, each supporting 80MB/second burst data rates, significantly enhances I/O connectivity and throughput. o Maximum disk storage capacity increased to 132GB with the attachment of up to four IBM 7202 Model 900 Expansion Racks. o Higher performance disk storage subsystem attached via the 80MB/second Subsystem Adapter (#6211). DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS I/O architectural enhancements enable the POWERserver 970 to include dual Micro Channel buses with every POWERserver 970 system. Standard with each system are eight Micro Channel slots connected to one of the buses. An additional eight Micro Channel slots utilizing the second bus may be added optionally to the system. Increasing the maximum number of Micro Channel slots to 16 and integrating the SCSI I/O adapter increases the quantity of adapters supported and improves configuration flexibility and performance. The architectural enhancements also enable the rated speed of both Micro Channel buses to be doubled compared to previous POWERserver systems. The channel improvements allow future adapters to transfer data in less time and at a higher transfer rate. Applications requiring high I/O throughput take advantage of these I/O performance improvements. In addition, the higher I/O bandwidth of the POWERserver 970 system helps the system to support a larger number of users in multi-user application environments. The POWERserver 970 CPU Drawer supports up to eight standard form factor Micro Channel adapter cards. Packaging improvements enable the POWERserver 970 to optionally support up to eight additional Micro Channel adapter cards in any combination of standard form factor or 9-inch form factor. USER PRODUCTIVITY The increased disk, channel and processor performance of the POWERserver 970 improves user productivity by reducing transaction response times and increasing total system throughput. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The POWERserver 970 uses state-of-the-art 0.5-Micron four-level metalization CMOS technology throughout the design of the product. Use of this technology extends the life cycle and protects the customer's hardware investment. Field-installable model conversions are offered to convert installed POWERserver 930, 950 and 950E systems to the POWERserver 970E. All the fixed disk devices and most of the media devices from the installed POWERserver system may be retained for use on the converted system. A customer's investment in installed POWERserver systems is protected. In addition, the POWERserver 970 system is binary compatible with all other systems in the RISC System/6000 family of processors. This also protects a customer's investment in software. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The model conversions offered for POWERserver 930, 950 and 950E systems permit customers to extend the I/O performance of installed POWERserver systems to take advantage of the enhancements of the POWERserver 970. The I/O enhancements may allow customers to support additional users on their installed POWERserver systems. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT Increases in the number of users supported on a system, enabled by I/O throughput improvements and increased disk capacity, reduce the need for customers to purchase additional systems as needs grow. This reduces the number of systems that must be managed and simplifies systems management. PUBLICATIONS The following publications are shipped with the RISC System/6000 POWERserver 970. IBM fixed disk configurations supported by the POWERserver 930, 950 or 950E upon announcement will be supported by the POWERserver 970E. All Micro Channel cards, external and internal devices supported by the POWERserver 930, 950 and 950E upon announcement are supported by the POWERserver 970E except the Asynchronous Drawer (and adapter) and the Internal 5 1/4-inch Diskette Drive. In addition, if the POWERserver 930, 950 or 950E has the optional CD-ROM Internal Drive (#2600) or the optional 150MB Internal 1/4-Inch Cartridge Tape Drive (#2636) installed in the CPU drawer, the features will be relocated to the media drawer and feature numbers changed to #2601 and #2637 respectively. The POWERserver 970E requires a minimum of 64MB of memory. For POWERserver 930, 950 and 950E systems that do not meet the minimum memory requirement of the POWERserver 970E, additional memory must be ordered. Memory must be included as part of the model upgrade order but priced separately. Memory cards are available in pairs for the POWERserver 970E in increments of 16, 32, 64 and 128MB with a memory limit of 512MB (eight 64MB memory cards). The Model Conversion MES includes memory cards compatible with the new 50MHz POWERserver 970 processor board for the conversion of the customer's existing memory. The performance of the POWERserver 970E with the new processor and memory are the same as that of an equivalently configured POWERserver 970 system. In those instances where the customer elects to retain existing 670 MB SCSI disk drive as the base disk drive or the 40 MB Disk Drive Subsystem Adapter in the upgrade to the POWERserver 970E, the performance of the POWERserver 970E may be somewhat less than the POWERserver 970. This upgrade offers a high degree of flexibility in increasing the performance level of the system and helping the customers to take advantage of the performance of the new processor while protecting their investment in fixed disks. The Model Conversion MES contains the following items ordered through the HONE configurator. o Processor replacement o Memory conversion (current memory configuration must be specified on the order) o New labels o Installation instructions o New diagnostics o New publications. NOTE: Parts removed become the property of IBM. PLANNING INFORMATION CABLE ORDERS: To simplify the ordering process, a concept of predetermined device location within the rack enclosures is used. This results in a system being assembled in a predefined rack configuration. All interconnecting cables and filler panels are added automatically when the system is built at the plant and eliminates the need to order these items separately. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: For problem analysis, the IBM RISC System/6000 POWERserver 970 diagnostic programs, preloaded on the system, provide console routines that lead a user through problem determination and help provide direction to resolve problems.
