THE IBM XSTATION 120 Contents Announcement Letter Number 190-027 dated February 15, 1990 US - Last Revised on February 15, 1990 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM Xstation 120 is an advanced-function LAN-attached X server station that supports the Massachusetts Institute of Technology X Window System (1). It attaches to hosts that comply with the X Window System (Version 11 Release 3) and uses the processing power of the network hosts and the graphics capabilities of the Xstation 120. For X Window System applications, it provides an attractive, lower-cost alternative to workstations on a LAN. In a LAN-based X Windows environment, the X Windows protocol allows the separation of the computing function (at the host) from user interaction (at the X server station). From the Xstation 120, the user can control and view multiple applications concurrently. The Xstation 120 can support X Window System graphical applications and interfaces, as well as character-based ones. Attachment of a local printer will allow the Xstation 120 to be used for convenience printing. The Xstation 120 requires the AIX (R) Xstation Manager licensed program to be installed on an IBM RISC System/6000 system to download the X server software to the Xstation 120. IBM intends to provide support of the IBM Xstation 120 on AIX PS/2 (R) in the future. (1) Registered Trademark of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Purchase Description Machine Model Price IBM Xstation 120 7010 120 $ 2,200 Purchase prices for associated features and cables are listed in the 'Charges' section of the customer announcement letter. Planned Availability: Second quarter 1990 Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Quiet, compact, lower-cost alternative to an intelligent workstation in an X Window System environment. o Simultaneous dual LAN support (Ethernet and the optional token-ring adapter). o Provides ability for an application to open windows on hosts with the X Window System installed. o Wide range of grayscale and color display support -- up to 256 colors from a palette of 16.7 million colors. o Local printer support. o Performance features: - Separate processors for graphics and I/O functions. - Ability to add up to 8 megabytes of system memory. - Local font caching. o Advanced functions: - Save under of areas covered by pop-up windows. - Backing store (local storage of images hidden by overlapping windows). - Color and grayscale graphics support on multiple windows. o Requires that AIX Xstation Manager/6000 be installed on a RISC System/6000 system running AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 and that X server software be downloaded via the LAN to the Xstation 120. DESCRIPTION Within a LAN-attached X Window System environment, the IBM Xstation 120 offers a lower-cost alternative to an intelligent workstation on a LAN. The Xstation 120's quiet and compact packaging makes it attractive in many environments. With the Ethernet and the optional token-ring adapter both installed, the IBM Xstation 120 can be attached to two LANs concurrently, fitting into most customer environments and providing high availability to host resources. Its built-in serial and parallel ports allow local attachment of IBM Xstation 120 supported printers. The Xstation 120 supports windowing on a wide range of IBM all-points-addressable displays. No feature cards are needed; however, additional video memory may be added to accommodate more colors and shades on the higher resolution displays. With both color and grayscale support standard, the Xstation 120 supports a color palette of 16.7 million colors, of which up to 256 can be displayed at one time. The IBM Xstation 120 includes two processors: the TMS 34010 (2) Graphics Processor controls the graphics and windowing functions and the 80186 Processor controls I/O functions. This dual-processor approach improves system performance, reduces LAN overhead, and provides rapid keyboard response and mouse tracking. (2) Registered trademark of Texas Instruments, Incorporated. The Xstation 120 implements local caching to optimize memory usage, save under, and backing store to reduce LAN traffic, as well as to provide quick access to windows and fonts stored in local memory. Its memory-expansion capability of 8 megabytes (to 8.5 megabytes maximum) provides the capability for a large number of windows to be utilized. The Xstation 120 can be used with multiple hosts on one LAN. If one host fails, exclusive of the boot server, the Xstation 120 can continue to function using other hosts. Since host resources are shared by multiple users, resources that one user does not need are available to other users on the LAN. The AIX Xstation Manager/6000 software is downloaded from an IBM RISC System/6000 system at initial program load. The resulting centralized location of Xstation control software simplifies maintenance and upgrading of the software, and enables functional growth, protecting the customers' hardware investment. The Xstation 120 provides serial and parallel printer connections. Printer support is provided by using the Xstation Manager to redirect RISC System/6000 printer files to the Xstation 120. Currently, the ASCII data streams for the IBM Proprinter (TM) 4201 Model 003 and 4207 Model 002 are supported. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
