Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o 16/4 megabits-per-second adapter data rate -- program selectable o 64KB RAM on card o Up to 17,997-byte frame size at 16 megabits per second o RAM paging o Up to 254 link stations o Early Token Release at 16 megabits per second DESCRIPTION The IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A provides for the attachment of IBM Personal System/2 Models 50 and up, using the Micro Channel architecture, to the IBM Token-Ring Network. Attachment is provided for rings operating either at 4 or 16 megabits per second. The IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A is an enhanced, high-performance companion to the 4 megabits-per-second IBM Token-Ring Network Adapter/A. Major functional enhancements include the ability to attach to rings operating at 16 megabits per second and the inclusion of 64KB of shared RAM buffer memory. This new adapter is compatible at the PS/2 Micro Channel interface and with the IBM Token-Ring Network Adapter/A when running at 4 megabits per second. It requires a single standard length feature slot in the Personal System/2. The IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A protocols conform to IEEE 802.5 and ECMA 89 standards. The adapter provides logical link control functions conforming with the IEEE 802.2 standard and is compatible with International Standard ISO 8802/5. FUNCTIONAL ENHANCEMENTS: A major objective of the IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A is to support attachment of the Personal System/2 to 16 megabits-per-second Token-Rings. The major new functions available with this adapter include: o 4 and 16 megabits-per-second data rate -- The two-speed selectability provides for ease of migration from 4 to 16 megabits per second. Adapter data rate is selected by executing the PS/2 configuration program. Once selected, the data rate may be changed when required by re-executing the configuration program. o 64KB of shared RAM on card -- This enhancement provides for increased adapter throughput by supporting larger maximum frame sizes as well as RAM paging. o Larger maximum frame size -- At 16 megabits per second the maximum frame size is 17,997 bytes. At 4 megabits per second the maximum frame size is 4501 bytes. o RAM paging -- Supports better system resource utilization by allowing software to access all of the 64KB of RAM on the adapter while using only 16KB of PS/2 memory space. o Maximum number of link stations is increased from 64 to 254. o Early Token Release -- Early Token Release is an addition to the ring protocol and is implemented to more effectively utilize the 16 megabits-per-second data rate. This is a selectable option at 16 megabits per second only. PUBLICATIONS The IBM TOKEN-RING NETWORK 16/4 ADAPTER/A INSTALLATION AND TESTING INSTRUCTIONS is shipped with the product. MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: The IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A is designed and tested to operate on the following systems: MACHINE TYPE MODEL 8550 021/031/061 8560 041/071 8570 A21/E61/121 8580 041/071/111/311 PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: When operating Token-Ring Network at 16 megabits per second and using PC DOS for the PS/2, IBM PC DOS Version 3.3 or 4.0 and IBM Local Area Network Support Program Version 1.1 are required. PC DOS Version 3.3 and LAN Support Program Version 1.02 are supported when operating at 4 megabits per second and 16KB of RAM. When operating the PS/2 with Operating System/2 (TM) (OS/2 (TM)), IBM OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.1 is required, and the LAN adapter support is included in this product as a component of the communications subsystem. Application programs properly written to the IBM NETBIOS or IEEE 802.2 programming interfaces and currently marketed should continue to run with the IBM Local Area Network Support Program when operating with the IBM PC DOS Versions 3.3 and 4.0. NETBIOS and 802.2 program interfaces are provided in OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.1. Refer to Programming Announcements 287-100, dated April 2, 1987, and 287-499, dated November 3, 1987. It is the customer's responsibility to determine whether specific programs written to the NETBIOS or IEEE 802.2 interfaces will, in fact, work. IBM application programs supported and tested on DOS 3.3 and 4.0 are: o IBM PC 3270 Emulation Program Version 3.04 (59X9969) o PC LAN Program 1.3 (84X0076, 3.5-inch; 84X0061, 5.25-inch) o IBM Remote NETBIOS Access Facility Program Version 2.1 (16F0535) o IBM Asynchronous Communications Server Program 1.1 (1642003) o IBM Asynchronous Connection Server Program Version 1.01 (83X9132).
