IBM PS/2 WIZARD ADAPTER AND IBM PS/2 WIZARD MEMORY EXPANSION OPTION IBM Announcement Letter Number 189-186 dated November 14, 1989 IBM US - Last Revised on November 14, 1989 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The PS/2 (R) Wizard Adapter, with a 33MHz Intel i860 (1) microprocessor, enhances PS/2 systems by offering high levels of numeric-intensive processing capability in a standard PS/2. The IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter (#3462, 34F3062) is an application accelerator busmaster card for the IBM PS/2 Models 70 and 80 that significantly increases performance by adding the Intel i860 microprocessor for advanced, numeric-intensive applications. The i860 processor features a RISC integer core, an advanced floating point processing unit, a graphics unit, internal instruction cache and internal data cache in a single 1-million transistor chip. The adapter also contains 2MB of random access memory (RAM), which is expandable to a total of 8MB using the IBM PS/2 Wizard Memory Expansion Option (#3461, 34F3061). The IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter uses a set of application device drivers, shipped with the product, that enable operation with Operating System/2 (TM) (OS/2 (R)). It is IBM's intention to provide AIX (TM) support for the IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter on PS/2 systems in a future release. The Intel i860 Microprocessor OS/2 Software Development Tools, a software toolkit that enables developers to port applications for IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter, has been developed by Intel and is available for purchase from IBM. Special support will be provided by IBM to registered software developers for a limited time, via a Limited Availability Developer Support Program (LADSP). DESCRIPTION The IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter is a RISC-based application accelerator for the IBM PS/2 Models 70 and 80 that uses the Intel i860 microprocessor. It is intended to provide high performance in a standard general-purpose PS/2 for users with both numeric-intensive applications and standard personal computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets). The i860 microprocessor (announced by Intel on February 27, 1989) is a RISC integer core and contains an advanced floating point processor, a graphics unit and internal instruction and data cache integrated in a single one-million transistor chip. The IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter contains 2MB of DRAM (85 nanosecond). The application or subroutine running on Wizard resides in this on-card memory. Users with application requirements greater than 2MB can select the IBM PS/2 Wizard Memory Expansion Option adapter. This adapter attaches to the IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter and provides the user with an additional 6MB of memory, for a maximum of 8MB. The IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter operates under IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.1 and IBM Operating System/2 Extended Edition Version 1.1, and later versions, through the use of application device drivers shipped with this product. These drivers control the use of the i860 processor and provide interface functions to the 80386/80486. In order to take advantage of IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter, applications must be recompiled to run with the i860 processor, using the Intel i860 Microprocessor OS/2 Software Development Tools. These tools include a Simulator Linker, Assembler, Debugger, C Compilers and Libraries. This toolkit is available through IBM (refer to Programming Announcement 289-638, dated November 14, 1989). Intel intends to provide a FORTRAN Toolkit (including FORTRAN Vectorizer) for OS/2 FORTRAN applications. Developers of OS/2 applications can utilize the capabilities of the PS/2 Wizard Adapter by structuring the application to take advantage of the 386/486 and the i860 processors. A highly interactive, SAA (TM)-compliant user interface portion of the application can be written using a standard SAA language such as C/2 (TM), with the appropriate set of PM calls. This portion of the application executes on the 386/486. The computationally-intensive portion of the application is written using one of the languages in the development toolkit provided by Intel especially for the announced product. These two portions of the application are separately compiled and linked. The 386/486 portion is initially given control and is written to load and execute the i860 portion as needed. Alternatively, for applications that do not need to be SAA compliant, and are coded entirely in ANSI-C, the entire application can be written to execute on the i860. While this does not take full advantage of the multiple processors available in the system, and the I/O associated with the application will not be as efficient, it may be the fastest port for existing applications. System performance is highly application dependent. A publication on performance characteristics, THE IBM PS/2 WIZARD ADAPTER PERFORMANCE GUIDE FOR OS/2, will be distributed at the Application Specialist class to be held at the Engineering/Scientific National Support Center in Dallas, TX.
