Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION These low-cost PS/2 premium systems provide the processor and graphics performance required by many users. The 486SLC2 50/25MHz processor provides performance equal to the 486SX 33MHz. The Micro Channel architecture offers a fast, efficient and reliable data flow with a large selection of optional adapters. The PS/2 53 and 53LS 486SLC2 with their optional features and compatible operating systems and applications provide a solution for a wide range of applications. Along with other systems of the PS/2 family, they can provide a total stand-alone or network system solution. The high degree of compatibility between the 53 486SLC2 and other PS/2 devices protects PS/2 hardware and software investments. An extensive list of Micro Channel options is supported. The system may be upgraded with the addition of adapters and internal and external I/O devices. The DOS and OS/2 operating systems and compatible software are supported. The PS/2 53 486SLC2 supports application development and growth through expansion features. The standard system memory may be expanded to 16MB on the system board. Available 16-bit Micro Channel slots allow the addition of options for additional applications. Available direct access storage devices (DASD) bays provide for the addition of 3.5-inch DASD devices: one 3.5-inch hard disk device in the 0B7 and 0BB models; one 3.5-inch diskette device and two 3.5-inch hard disk devices in the 1BX and 2BX models with the 53LS Medialess Upgrade Kit installed. User productivity is significantly enhanced by many of the features of the PS/2 53 486SLC2. These new features are as follows: o Powerful 486SLC2 processor operating at 50/25MHz for improved computing performance an internal memory cache controller with 16KB memory cache o SVGA graphics subsystems provide high refresh rates and significant improvement in device driver performance o Enhanced security and Vital Product Data o Keyboard port and keyboard, pointing device port, video port, serial port and parallel port. NETWORK SUPPORT The PS/2 53LS 486SLC2 (9553-1BX) supports Ethernet Version 2 and IEEE 802.3 (CSMA/CD) interfaces, and data transfers at 10Mbps via 10Base-T (twisted-pair) or through the Attachment Unit Interface (AUI) connection. Data transfers via 10Base2 (thin cable), 10Base5 (thick cable), or a fiber optic cable can be accomplished through the AUI connection and a user-provided external transceiver. The PS/2 53LS 486SLC2 (9553-2BX) supports a 4Mbps or 16Mbps token-ring local area network attached to an appropriate file server supporting remote initial program load if an optional diskette or fixed disk has not been installed. POWER MANAGEABLE DISPLAY Power-manageable displays that conform to the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) Display Power Management Signaling (DPMS) interface can use the DPMS-enabled BIOS utility package to save power. The utility instructs power-manageable displays to go into various power-saving states after a period of user inactivity has been detected. DPMS puts power manageable displays into one of three different states: 1. Standby: Minimum power savings but immediate return to ON. -- Default activated after 15 minutes. 2. Suspend: Medium power savings but medium return to ON. -- Default activated after 30 minutes. 3. Off: Maximum power savings but noticeable delay in return to ON. -- Default activated after 60 minutes. Timeout defaults can be set for from 1 to 99 minutes. After December 1993, the DOS and Windows DPMS utility package may be obtained from: o IBM PC Company BBS at 919-517-0001 o OS/2 (R) BBS accessed via ADVANTIS o CompuServ Information Service The OS/2 version will be available in late first quarter 1994 from the same sources. COMPATIBILITY: Refer to the 9553 Sales Manual pages or contact your IBM representative for a complete list of supported features and options and compatible IBM and vendor software. The Sales Manual is updated periodically. The system contains licensed system programs, which include SurePath BIOS, set configuration and features, test, copy an option diskette, backup/restore and update system program. These licensed system programs are provided on the 53 486SLC2 Reference and Diagnostic Diskettes shipped with the system, models 9553-0B7 and 9553-0BB, or 53LS 486SLC2 LAN Administrator Diskette Package, models 9553-1BX and 9553-2BX, and are stored on the host. The LAN Administrator Package loads SurePath BIOS and system programs from the host into system memory. SurePath BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the system and to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT (TM), Personal Computer AT (R) and the Personal System/2 (R) family. Due to the high level of integration and increased system board memory capacity, features such as the PS/2 Micro Channel memory adapter options are not supported. LIMITATIONS: The system may only be installed in the horizontal position. The total number of adapters is limited by the average of 1.6 amps per slot. The systems support only 2MB, 4MB and 8MB 70ns single in-line memory modules (SIMM). With 24-bit addressing, the maximum addressable memory space is 16MB. The system reserves 128KB of memory when SurePath BIOS/POST is copied to RAM for execution in systems with less than 16MB of system board memory. The customer will have 15.914MB (15936KB) available when 16MB of memory is installed. The licensed system programs include SurePath BIOS, set configuration and features, copy an option diskette, test, backup/restore, and update system program. The licensed system programs are provided on the PS/2 53 486SLC2 Reference and Diagnostic Diskettes. High performance SurePath BIOS uses 128KB of system memory. Display adapter cards that use the Auxiliary Video Extension, when installed in a system, require installation in slot 1 and attachment of a display to the system video connector during configuration of the system. SCSI devices may only be external and require a SCSI adapter. The system requires ABIOS from Reference Diskette Version 1.1, or later, to run OS/2. The Enhanced 2.88MB Diskette Drive's (#1272, 6451272) electronic diskette eject button feature is supported. The software-controlled diskette eject feature and the ability to lock a diskette into or out of the drive are not supported. The following optional features are not supported: FEATURE PART NUMBER NUMBER IBM PS/2 MMC Adapter 1436 95F1436 M-Motion Video Adapter/A 1991 95F1091 IBM PS/2 Internal Tape Backup Unit 5279 30F5279 USER GROUP REQUIREMENTS: This announcement satisfies, or partially satisfies, requirements from one or more of the worldwide user group communities, which include Australasian SHARE GUIDE (ASG), COMMON, COMMON EUROPE, GUIDE, European G.U.I.D.E., Japan GUIDE SHARE (JGS), Latin American GUIDE (LAG), SHARE EUROPE and SHARE.
