LIMITATIONS DATA COMPRESSION: V.42bis data compression is limited by applications that utilize the BIOS controlling the serial port. Data compression for applications that do not bypass the BIOS is limited to 19.2Kbps. Many applications bypass the BIOS. Hence, they allow data compression approaching the theoretical limit of 57.6Kbps, or four times data compression. AMPS CELLULAR PHONE INTERFACES/CABLES: Care must be taken to ensure that the user's cellular phone is compatible with the cellular phone interfaces/cables. For example, Motorola's Cellular Connection products only interface to Motorola cellular phones. CELLULAR PERFORMANCE LIMITATION: The Motorola "Portable/Mobile Cellular Connection" must have carrier set at 1200bps when in receive mode. With data compression, a 4800bps data rate may be obtained. Inside buildings, the performance of cellular data communications is affected by radio wave reflection and attenuation. To improve performance, IBM recommends: o Moving the cellular phone until a maximum phone receive signal strength (RSSI) is indicated o Usage of cellular phone communications outside of buildings or near windows inside buildings where radio wave relection and attenuation are minimized o Enable error correction and data compression protocols. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The modem is designated as customer setup. Customer setup, service and programming information is provided. CABLE ORDERS: The appropriate cable (with connectors) is provided with the shipment group and is also separately orderable. To order separately, the IBM High Speed Internal Data/FAX Modem requires the 2.13-meter (7-foot) RJ11-to-RJ11 cable for the U.S., Japan, Canada and Latin American (except Chile); and the 9-pin MiniDIN-to-MiniDIN cable (#4366, 42G2741) for all other countries. Also, the modem has the ability to facilitate cellular communication via AMPS (American Mobile Phone Service) cellular phone interface cables. The following Independent Option Vendors (IOVs) have tested their listed connectivity products with this modem and have advised IBM of compatibility. IBM has not evaluated these products and makes no comments or judgments about their functions, quality and performance. AMPS CELLULAR PHONE INTERFACES/CABLES o Motorola: Portable/Mobile Cellular Connection (Note 1) o Spectrum Cellular: AXCELL -- Cellular Phone Interface Cable Kit (Note 1) NOTE 1: Ordering information is to be obtained by calling these Independent Option Vendors (IOVs), or their distributors. Care must be taken to ensure that the user's cellular phone is compatible with the cellular phone interfaces/cables. For example, Motorola's Cellular Connection products only interface to Motorola cellular phones. INSTALLABILITY: The IBM High Speed Internal Data/FAX Modem installation time is approximately 30 minutes. These estimates assume that the using system has a 3.5-inch diskette drive. If no drive is available on the using system, the enabling code contained on the diskette in the modem shipment group must be loaded from an external drive, or ported from another system or docking station. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: The troubleshooting procedures consist of a power-on self-test, diagnostic tests and easy-to-follow troubleshooting instructions designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element can then be replaced under existing warranty provisions. First failure data capture (FFDC) and error logging are implemented for ease of maintenance. Any detected modem error will be captured and logged for analysis. This will help identify and reduce the NO TROUBLE FOUND (NTF) common in modem devices. As part of the "AT" command results, the FFDC will be indicated in the "AT" command results of the diagnostic command.
