Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS AND ENERGY EFFICIENT The PS/2 E has been recognized by the EPA, and a host of other reviewers, as an environmentally friendly product. The product will be considered an Energy Star computer, when that EPA program officially announces. The use of recycled material and its low power consuming design, address the concerns of landfill management and pollutants that are a result of generating electric power. The PS/2 E is manufactured with recycled plastics for covers and recycled paper for its packaging and documentation. In addition, these parts and others are recyclable. The system is designed with a high degree of disassembly to enable this recycling capability. The product design uses similar thermal plastic parts that are coded, via an IBM system, that will better facilitate recycling at the end of the life of the product. The PS/2 E consumes dramatically less power than conventional desktop systems. When fully configured and active, the system unit consumes approximately 23 watts of power. In the idle state, power consumption drops to approximately 16 watts. Included with the system unit are power management utilities that allow the user to set the duration of time for the hard drive motor to shut down when it is not active. This utility provides additional acoustical management as well as power management. When the hard drive motor is stopped the system is silent, making for a user-friendly environment. REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT The PS/2 E design addresses a growing demand for more energy efficient and environmentally friendly products. These solutions allow for product installation in environments that are already constrained by existing building electrical distribution capacities and or UPS devices. The PS/2 E consumes approximately one fourth of the power of a conventional desktop product. Customers of this product will enjoy a reduction in their utility bills and will also benefit by a host of secondary enhancements; these benefits include the ability to install more computers per branch circuit and on existing UPS devices or the ability to run the products longer on existing UPS devices because they will consume less of the standby power. The product produces little heat and virtually no noise, which allows its installation in working environments that are sensitive to these by-products of normal computers. SMALL FLEXIBLE FOOTPRINT/SILENT OPERATION The PS/2 E mechanical package is approximately 12 x 12 x 2.5-inches. It is designed to operate in a variety of orientations and environments. The product can sit in a normal desktop orientation or, when used with its optional vertical stand, can be placed on the floor or on the desk. Two additional and unique orientations are added to this product's capabilities: Wall mounting with the assistance of either a custom fixture to accommodate the system unit and 9507 Color Display, or wall mounting of the system unit only via accommodations in the bottom of the system frame. The product can be installed within a drawer for medialess LAN stations. The PS/2 E is designed to operate (fully configured) silently. No fan resides in this mechanical package and a power management utility is provided to turn the hard drive motor off when it is not active. The only noise that the end user will experience will be the diskette drive or hardfile when they are activated. END USER PRODUCTIVITY The PS/2 E uses a 486SLC (TM) 2 50/25MHz processor and XGA/2 graphics. Its basic performance is extremely competitive with machines its size, as well as those much larger. Totally unique productivity attributes, like PCMCIA 2.01 remote IPL support and electronic lock and unlock facilities, allow PS/2 E installations to exist within the framework of end-user requirements, such as asset protection and intellectual property protection. In addition, one of the most important attributes is "Plug-n-Play". This design point allows the end user to install and remove appropriate PCMCIA devices without the need to power down or reconfigure the system. The PCMCIA devices are accessible, front and rear, and when inserted in a PCMCIA slot, the system recognizes the insertion, interrogates the ID bit and loads the appropriate driver (resident on the 120MB hard drive). That device is immediately available for the end user. Devices such as PCMCIA hard drives, solid state files, fax/modems can be installed or removed at any time. This design point allows for excellent synergy between desktop computers, desktop and mobile computers or the ability to share PCMCIA devices between multiple users. Because of the Plug-n-Play (hot pluggability/auto-configurability) characteristics of the IBM PS/2 E, the PS/2 E has possibly the most configurable computer slots in desktop computing. PCMCIA -- PLUG-N-PLAY: The PS/2 E system unit is designed to accommodate four PCMCIA devices conforming to the PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) PC Card Standard Release 2.01. The possible configurations within a PS/2 E are as follows: o Four Type I adapters (memory) o Four Type II adapters (adapters) o Two Type III adapters (DASD) o Any combination of the above. Most devices are "hot pluggable" and can be inserted and extracted without removing the systems covers. This is commonly called Plug-n-Play. Additionally, the PS/2 E provides support for RIPL (remote initial program load) for the IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter (with appropriate software and driver support). A unique feature of the PS/2 E PCMCIA design is an electronic lock and unlock utility. This security feature will physically lock the PCMCIA devices in the slots until a password is entered. This feature provides a level of security that protects against the casual theft of assets and intellectual property. It operates with DOS, Windows and OS/2 operating systems. The IBM Credit Card family provides users with the wide flexibility of attaching the PS/2 E system to LAN networks, most popular network operating systems, and to host applications, 5250 and 3270. Refer to Product Announcements 192-212 for 3270 Emulation, 192-213 for Token-Ring and 192-212 for Ethernet. Additionally, IBM provides fax/modems and solid state mass storage Cards. ENABLE CUSTOMER COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE The PS/2 E supports four Plug-n-Play PCMCIA slots, RIPL, booting and security. These are unique attributes to this system and desktop computers. When the PS/2 E is used with mobile computers a business will be able to share devices between desktop workstations and portable systems. Users will be able to transfer PCMCIA hard drives, solid state files, and adapters (such as fax/modems) between their personal PS/2 E and a portable or tablet system. This ability allows the user to instantly migrate databases, operating system environments and demonstration files from the desktop to the mobile system and back again with little effort. When the PCMCIA devices are reinstalled in the PS/2 E, customer databases and files are current and the mobile system is now available for another employee to utilize. Transportability, shared resources and security are attributes embodied in the PS/2 E. Users can manage personal data, migrate it to portables for work, or transfer it to a home computer. The credit card size, low power consumption and rugged design are key attributes to provide synergy with mobile computers. Businesses that install the PS/2 E will realize improved productivity with the ability to migrate data quickly between the different systems. Security of intellectual property is improved by the electronic lock/unlock support in the PS/2 E. The user can remove the DASD device and lock it up in a desk or safe. PRODUCT POSITIONING PS/2 E (9533) The PS/2 E's attributes of Plug-n-Play, energy efficiency, flexible installation orientations, silent operation, TFT Display support and PCMCIA expansion are solutions to many existing customer requirements. Environments such as hospitals, banks, libraries, and executive offices are potential opportunities. Industries that require mobile computing will appreciate the synergy between the PS/2 E and lap tops, notebooks, tablets and palm tops that support PCMCIA 2.01. The hot pluggability/auto-configurability and the ability to share devices effortlessly allow the PS/2 E the unique opportunity to complement the entire mobile computing product line (conforming to PCMCIA 2.01.) The PS/2's low power consumption and energy efficient design provide end users a more cost effective desktop computer solution. Additionally, the product will appeal to customers with environments that are constrained either by existing power distribution capabilities or existing UPS (un-interruptible power supply) capability. Customers with intentions of relocating to new buildings will have a considerably smaller electrification cost by installing systems that consume approximately one fourth of the power of current desktop solutions. The PS/2 E will comply with the EPA Energy Star Program. This design point should allow it to compete with other products when that design point is declared by local, state and federal government contracts.
