IBM MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY AND SUPPORT SYSTEM/2: MASS/2, an OS/2 based software application working with the Remote Maintenance Processor (RMP) on the PS/2 Server 295, provides a graphical interface for managing functions, such as automatic reboot and reconfiguration, comprehensive error logging, selective error notification including dial-out capability, fail-safe access in case of power outage, remote power cycling and system configuration, warning alarms, user and administrative password security, and remote console capabilities. o Advantages for Remote Users and System Administrators The PS/2 Server 295 with MASS/2 provides the capability to monitor, tune and control the PS/2 Server 295 from local or remote locations. MASS/2 also allows the PS/2 Server 295 to recover from hardware failures, such as disk drives, SCSI controllers, and memory, and continue to run without human intervention. With MASS/2, the PS/2 Server 295 can be geographically distributed across large organizations while retaining the ability to be managed in a centralized support location. MASS/2 provides continual monitoring of resources and system critical parameters. In addition, remote power cycling and system configuration control, as well as alarm parameters, are all possible with the comprehensive system management capabilities. MASS/2 features are available from the system console, from any PC on the network, or by modem from anywhere in the world. With MASS/2, LAN networks can be easily managed whether they are local or thousands of miles away. o Messages, Statistics and Logs Warning parameters for the system can be set with MASS/2. Once set, the system automatically sends warning alerts to users, dials out to remote administrators, or shuts down if operational limits such as temperature reach unacceptable limits. The MASS/2 information is displayed logically, and more detail is available at the click of the mouse. The systems operational statistics, such as CPUs, memory, disk utilization, and even text displayed on the remote server LCD panel, are available in real time. MASS/2 displays a record of the last 60 minutes for each statistic. The statistics are stored to disk for long-term storage and analyses. MASS/2 records all hardware failures, network errors and other critical events. These are maintained in a non-volatile log easily accessed for review. Because the RMP is battery-backed, the log can always be accessed even if the server is not operating. o System Recovery With MASS/2, the PS/2 Server 295 can recover from failures quickly and easily without human intervention. If a hardware failure occurs, diagnostics resident in the server identify the faulty component and isolate it from the rest of the system. In the case of a software timeout, the server detects errors through a series of security timers. In the case of combined hardware and software errors, the system reboots and reconfigures. After reboot, all applications are automatically restarted. The PS/2 Server 295 with RMP and MASS/2 provide the system administrator with very high levels of management control and assure clients that system availability will be maximized. IBM MULTI PROCESSING EXTENSIONS/2: IBM Multi Processing Extensions/2, used in conjunction with IBM OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 -- Advanced or other supported network operating systems, provides software support for multiprocessing on the PS/2 Server 295. This allows higher levels of performance and redundancy, both of which are required to deliver the functions and high availability demanded in the customer's mission critical applications. IBM ORTHOGONAL RAID-5 DISK ARRAY/2: IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 is a unique software application that provides not only the highest levels of RAID-5 data protection, but also protects the customer's critical data from hardware failures of the entire SCSI subsystem. This additional protection, called Orthogonal, provides higher levels of availability and reliability than traditional RAID-5 implementations. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The IBM Multi Processing Extensions/2 and IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 applications protect not only the customer's investment in hardware, but investment in software and vital company records. The hardware investment is protected since both of these applications allow the customer to migrate to higher levels of performance and capacity by simply upgrading an existing system. Multi Processing and Orthogonal RAID-5 enable growth paths that significantly improve performance and system capacity, while at the same time provide fault tolerant functions that protect the customer's investment in software and intellectual property. With IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2, the total system capacity of 28GB can be utilized in multiple arrays of up to 16 drives per array. The capability to have online spares and "hot plugging" disk drives, combined with the ability to rebuild the disk array without interruption to client services, results in both high performance and high availability in a system that can expand to meet the customer's needs. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT IBM Multi Processing Extensions/2 and IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 work in conjunction with MASS/2 to provide constant system updates of both processor activity and array status. If configuration tuning is required, it can be done through MASS/2, either locally or remotely. System status, including processors and arrays, can also be accessed either locally or remotely. Should the array experience a disk failure, the software will rebuild the array using the existing drives or online spares, if available. This occurs without human intervention, and the operation of the LAN continues during the rebuild operation. SUMMARY IBM Maximum Availability and Support System/2 is an integral part of the PS/2 Server 295 system concept, is a prerequisite for the system, and is shipped preloaded with each PS/2 Server 295. This system management software provides system administrators with a sophisticated tool to manage large geographically disperse networks, and in conjunction with IBM Multi Processing Extensions/2 and IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2, provides innovative functions for high-end mission critical installations. IBM Multi Processing Extensions/2 provides higher levels of system performance by enabling multiprocessing in the PS/2 Server 295. Customers who require the highest levels of performance in mission critical applications can reach the goals using this application in conjunction with IBM OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 -- Advanced or other supported network operating systems. Also, since the application is designed to run in conjunction with the MASS/2 software, customers are able to retain comprehensive system management capabilities essential to large distributed networks. IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 provides large capacity, high performance disk arrays required in large database applications. In addition, data integrity is maintained with the fully integrated RAID-5 technology. This not only protects the customer's data, but allows for continued operation of the LAN, even while the array is being reconfigured. Because IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 is integrated with MASS/2, most error recoveries are accomplished without human intervention or loss of services to clients.
