DESCRIPTION INVESTMENT PROTECTION PERFORMANCE: Many PS/2 Model 80 applications are disk intensive. Micro Channel Architecture and the intelligent busmaster Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) adapter, the PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter, laid the groundwork for the introduction of high performance disk products. The flexibility of this approach is now exploited with the improved performance of new 80MB and 160MB SCSI fixed disk drives with the average seek time improved to 17 and 16 milliseconds (from 23 milliseconds on the previously announced 60MB and 120MB SCSI fixed disk drives). STANDARDS AND ARCHITECTURE: Micro Channel Architecture provides a base that allows emerging technologies (such as SCSI) to be quickly incorporated into the PS/2 Model 80 family of systems. The Personal System/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter allows the Model 80 to take advantage of the latest DASD and input/output (I/O) device technologies as they become available. GROWTH ENABLEMENT PERFORMANCE: Growth is often limited in small systems by the capacity and performance of available DASD. By markedly increasing the fixed disk drive capacities and performance, these new models provide increased growth capability. USER PRODUCTIVITY PERFORMANCE: The fixed disk drives on these new PS/2 models are designed to enable faster execution of disk intensive programs such as spreadsheets and file server applications, providing increased user productivity. The increased capacity and speed of both the 80MB and 160MB fixed disk drives allow quick access to far more data and program information, often eliminating the need for host or peer communications. COMPATIBILITY: The 8580 is designed to maintain compatibility with most software products currently operating under IBM DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT (TM), the Personal Computer AT (R), and the IBM Personal System/2 family. The 8580 Reference Diskette contains an update file (DISK386.SYS) and an installation program. The update file maintains compatibility between SCSI devices, IBM DOS, and some of the following types of programs that assume the fixed drive will utilize the system direct memory access (DMA) controller: o Multitasking DOS programs o Programs written for the 80386 microprocessor only o Programs that use the virtual 8086 mode of the 80386 microprocessor o Programs that emulate expanded memory specification (EMS) in extended memory. With this driver installed, a buffer is provided in the first megabyte of system memory, which serves as an intermediate location for data being transferred between the SCSI adapter and the requesting program's buffer. While this driver allows applications that utilize the system DMA controller to run, some performance degradation in file access time may be experienced. Only after problems have been experienced, and the performance trade-offs considered, should this program be utilized. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. LIMITATIONS: The 8580 supports a maximum of 16MB of memory. High performance BIOS uses 128KB of memory; an additional 256KB is reserved for system use in systems with 16MB of memory. The installation of either of the internal CD-ROM Drives (#0845, 6450845 or #1113, 6451113) that requires the CD-ROM Drive Kit A (#0847, 6450847) or the IBM Personal System/2 5.25-inch 1.2MB Internal Diskette Drive (#1006, 6451006) supersedes the installation of additional DASD devices in the 5.25-inch, full-high bay located in the front of the system. The 8580-A16 has two Micro Channel I/O slots with a Video Feature Extension. Graphics adapters that drive the Video Feature Extension are limited to one per system. The Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), as defined in the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for the attachment of external devices. The IBM PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter is in conformance with this standard and has an external port. A data security exposure exists, even with user-invoked password functions installed, since external SCSI controllers can attach through the external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data stored on internal and external SCSI devices. Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must be controlled to limit this exposure. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities. Therefore, maintaining compatibility with the following updated list of software vendor products, contained in Product Announcement 190-054, dated March 20, 1990, is inherent in their design. This list does not include all of the software products that will run on the Model 80.
