The Model 80 121 and 321 are high function, Micro Channel floor-standing systems utilizing the Intel 80386 processor running at 20MHz. With the Model 80 121 and 321, IBM introduces SCSI as a standard feature to the PS/2 product line. The fixed disk drive controller is the newly announced SCSI bus master, the IBM Personal System/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter. Also, the newly announced 3.5-inch, half-high SCSI fixed disk drives are standard on these new models. The Model 80 121 contains a 120MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive with 23ms average access time and the Model 80 321 contains a technologically advanced 320MB SCSI fixed disk drive with a 64KB look ahead buffer and 12.5ms average access time. Standard system board memory is 2MB 80ns. Two memory connectors are provided on the system board allowing system board memory expansion to a maximum of 4MB. Both of these new models support up to 16MB of system memory. The PS/2 Model 80 121 and 321 are designed for the business office environment and are excellent stand-alone workstations where computer-intensive applications are required and system expansion is necessary. In the communications environment, the Model 80 121 and 321 can function as a server or gateway in a network or act as an intelligent advanced function local area network (LAN) station. When connected to a host system the Model 80 121 and 321 can perform as an advanced multi-function station. The Model 80 121 and 321 have been enhanced in design to provide five Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) bays. The three bays located in the front of the system are customer accessible in that they can contain DASD devices which require insertion and removal of media. The remaining two bays are specifically designed for non-accessible DASD devices, such as fixed disks. The customer accessible bays consist of two 3.5-inch, half-high (HH) bays and one 5.25-inch, full-high (FH) bay. The top 3.5-inch, half-high bay contains a standard 1.44MB diskette drive, the second 3.5-inch, half-high bay and the 5.25-inch, full-high bay are open for expansion purposes. The standard fixed disk drive configuration of the Model 80 121 and 321 contains one SCSI fixed disk drive located in one of the two non-accessible bays. The other non-accessible bay contains the necessary hardware to install a second IBM SCSI fixed disk drive option. The 5.25-inch, full-high bay can be converted into two 3.5-inch, half-high bays through the use of the optional Fixed Disk Drive Kit A (#1053) (6451053). This conversion allows the installation of a third and fourth IBM SCSI fixed disk drive option. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: The following operating systems support the 8580-121 and 8580-321: OS/2 EE Version 1.1 and 1.2 (N1) OS/2 SE Version 1.2. DOS Version 3.3 and 4.0. (N2) AIX PS/2 Version 1.2. (N3) NOTES: (N1) OS/2 Version 1.1 supports up to two fixed disks. OS/2 Version 1.2 supports up to seven fixed disks. (N2) DOS 3.3 and 4.0 support up to two fixed disks in a system. DOS 4.0 supports up to seven fixed disks when Corrective Service Diskette (CSD) #UR29015 is installed. This CSD is also required to support Expanded Memory Support (EMS) in DOS 4.0. This diskette is available through your registered service coordinator. (N3) AIX PS/2 Version 1.2 supports up to four IBM internal fixed disks in a system. COMPATIBILITY: The 8580 is designed to maintain compatibility with many software products currently operating under IBM DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT (TM), the Personal Computer AT (R) and the PS/2 family. The 8580-121 and 8580-321 Reference Diskette contains an update file (DISK386.SYS) and an installation program. If you use IBM DOS and your system has a SCSI device installed, you may need to install this file. The update file maintains compatibility between SCSI devices, IBM DOS and some of the following types of programs: o Multi-tasking DOS programs o Programs written for the 80386 microprocessor only o Programs that use the virtual 8086 mode of the 80386 microprocessor o Programs that emulate Expanded Memory Specification (EMS) in extended memory. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. LIMITATIONS: The 8580 supports a maximum of 16MB of memory. High performance BIOS uses 128KB of memory and an additional 256KB is reserved for system use in systems with 16MB of memory. The installation of the internal CD-ROM Drive (#0845) (6450845) that requires the CD-ROM Drive Kit A (#0847) (6450847) or the PS/2 5.25-inch 1.2MB Internal Diskette Drive (#1006) (6451006) supersedes the installation of additional DASD devices in 5.25-inch, full-high bay located in the front of the system. USER GROUP REQUIREMENTS: Not applicable. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The 8580 is designated as customer setup. Customer setup publications are shipped with the system. CABLE ORDERS: There are no cabling requirements other than for system power, keyboard and display connections. Cables are provided with the system unit, keyboard and display, and the instructions are provided as part of initial setup. INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard and peripherals and inserts the Reference Diskette. Power is then turned on and the Automatic Configuration is run after the computer has successfully completed its initial self-tests. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction will appear on the screen. If the test is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the "A" drive. If an operating system is not found, the system attempts to load one from the "C" fixed disk drive. If an operating system is not found, the user will be prompted to insert a diskette. A final default is provided through the use of a ROM-loaded BASIC interpreter as explained in the QUICK REFERENCE MANUAL. LIMITATIONS: Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), as defined in the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for the attachment of external devices. The IBM PS/2 SCSI Adapter is in conformance with this standard and has an external port. A data security exposure exists, even with Power-On Password installed, since external SCSI controllers can attach through the external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data stored on internal and external SCSI devices. Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must be controlled to limit this exposure. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
