All Model 50 Z system units feature a 10Mhz microprocessor, ROM BASIC and 1MB of memory on the system board. Standard features include: o 1.44MB, 3.5-inch diskette drive o High-speed (85ns) memory o Fixed disk drive and integrated controller o Keyboard port o Serial/asynchronous port o Parallel port o Pointing device port o Video Graphics Array (VGA) port. The VGA port supports graphics and text modes including 640 x 480 pels, 320 x 200 pels in 256 colors and 720 x 400 text, and maintains compatibility with Color Graphics Array and Enhanced Graphics Array modes. The fixed disk drive has a capacity of 30MB or 60MB. The fixed disk controller is integrated with the drive. Drive specifications: 30MB 60MB Bytes/sector 512 512 Sectors/track 25 26 Cylinders 615 762 Number of heads 4 6 Data transfer rate 7.5M bps 8.4M bps Average access time 39ms 27ms Sector interleave 1:1 1:1 The system has two levels of BIOS that total 128KB. The Compatibility BIOS (CBIOS) with memory addressability of up to 1MB provides compatible support for current application programs. An additional version of BIOS, Advanced BIOS (ABIOS) provides support for multitasking operating systems and has extended memory addressability up to 16MB. The high level of feature integration on the system board reduces the requirement for optional adapters. Memory on the system board can be expanded to 2MB. The optional 80287 Math Co-Processor provides enhanced performance in arithmetic calculations. In addition, the system is designed for tool-free installation and includes security features in both BIOS/CMOS and an external keylock. Additional features of the system unit include three I/O slots (16-bit). A 94-watt automatic voltage-sensing power supply, a time and date clock with battery backup, an additional position for a second 3.5-inch diskette drive, and the IBM Enhanced Personal Computer Keyboard. NEW FEATURES Personal System/2 2MB Memory Module Kit-85ns (6450604, #5213) provides 2MB of 85 nanosecond memory. One 2MB Memory Module Kit-85ns can be installed on the system board of the IBM 8550-031/061 by replacing the standard 1MB of memory and bringing the system board to a capacity of 2MB. No switch setting is required. Refer to Product Announcement 188-079, dated June 2, 1988, for additional information. Optional 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A Cards (1497259, #7259) can be added to enhance system memory. Each card may be expanded from 0 to 8MB. Multiple cards can provide a maximum of 16MB of memory on the system, with one wait state. Refer to Product Announcement 188-084, dated June 2, 1988, for additional information.
