IBM 7690 CLINICAL WORKSTATION Contents Announcement Letter Number 190-036 dated March 6, 1990 US - Last Revised on March 6, 1990 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The new IBM 7690 Clinical Workstation provides a Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Model 30 based system, specifically designed to extend the nurse's workstation into the patient room environment. This ergonomically designed system is equipped with a backlit LCD display that includes LED touch. The 78-key keyboard is designed to close over the screen, fold open to its normal operating position or fold down on the front of the unit to avoid breakage. The system, including the keyboard, is drip proof and designed to allow wipe down for sterilization. The unit and the optional IBM-supplied mounting bracket meet the UL544 electrical requirements for use within the patient area. An optional bar code reader is also available. The Clinical Workstation has a 1.44MB diskette drive and three available card slots. One slot may be used for a communications attachment card, such as the IBM Token-Ring card. The remaining two slots are available for other customer use. The Clinical Workstation 3270 Emulation Program PRPQ PX0054 will provide 3270 emulation functions, including light pen support, for existing host applications. These benefits derive from the unique, customized design of the Clinical Workstation and its associated Spectrum software. The Clinical Workstation has been specially engineered for the patient care setting. The touch screen facilitates easy entry and retrieval of data and the small, upright configuration eases placement in the room itself. Additionally, the machine has been engineered to meet the demanding electrical codes of the patient care setting. The ease of operation and improved productivity can mean significant time savings, fewer errors and improved access to patient data for nurses, physicians, clinicians and other professionals. The savings in time for nurses alone is expected to be in the range of an hour per nurse per shift per day. These time savings can be re-invested in a number of ways, including reduced reliance on overtime and temporary nursing services and more time for hands-on patient care. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS: The implementation of the Clinical Workstation in a hospital-wide setting offers many advantages to the institution. These include reduced costs for nursing services, improved nurse retention and recruiting, expansion of hospital services without a corresponding increase in nursing costs, and improved image and morale. In addition, the system can provide improved access to patient data for a number of hospital departments, resulting in overall improvements in the quality of the hospital's efficiency and business operations. GROWTH ENABLEMENT: The CWS can allow the hospital to add services and beds without unduly straining the institution's resources. The normal configuration entails one Clinical Workstation per room and in most cases this means installing a Clinical Workstation in each new room. When the Clinical Workstation is used in conjunction with Spectrum software residing on one file server per nursing station, this additionally facilitates hospital expansion. Most of the processing takes place on the file server, with only occasional transfer back and forth to the hospital's host system, minimizing the load on the mainframe. New nursing units, wings and beds can be added with relative ease. INVESTMENT PROTECTION: The 7690 Clinical Workstation is designed to take advantage of the hospital's current investment in information systems, regardless of the nature of the system. Using the appropriate emulator card, the workstations can be installed directly to the mainframe to emulate the customer's existing 3270-type terminal. If the workstations are installed on a local area network (LAN) using the PS/2 Model 80 as the file server, this also facilitates preservation of the mainframe investment. The file servers can run unattended with the link to the mainframe through the LAN. Because the interface to the mainframe is programmed individually, virtually any existing hospital information system with the appropriate base of applications can interface to the Clinical Workstation. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT/SYSTEMS HANDLING: The same features that allow the 7690 Clinical Workstation to protect the customer's investment in technology also provide significant benefits in systems management and system handling. The flexibility of the workstation to emulate a 3270 terminal, the incorporation of the terminal into a LAN network, and the stand-alone operation of the network, all combine to ease the burden on the existing information system.
