Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION USER PRODUCTIVITY The IBM 3550, with its easy system attachment, allows the user quick access to a familiar desktop environment along with a system of expanded capabilities. Connecting or disconnecting the system to or from external peripheral equipment in a single action eliminates excessive cable handling between the system and the peripherals. The ease of initial installation of the IBM 3550 allows the user to have the unit up and running quickly. SYSTEM MANAGEMENT Installation of the system unit is an easy action. Cable management of attached peripherals is enhanced by attaching them to the IBM 3550 one time only. The user wishing to attach to the peripherals has only to slide the system unit into the IBM 3550. The IBM 3550 has the capability of charging the system unit's battery while in operation or when the system unit is powered off. This allows the user to continue using the system without worrying about the status of its battery. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The IBM 3550 uses Micro Channel architecture. Customers already owning desktop peripherals and applications, wishing to migrate to a notebook system strategy, are able to use most of those peripherals and attachments with the IBM 3550. This can be viewed as an extension of their current investment strategy. GROWTH ENABLEMENT For the customer with a notebook system strategy, the IBM 3550 allows expanded capabilities to the notebook. Two full-size, 16-bit Micro Channel slots are available to accept various adapter cards. A single, half-high bay, capable of supporting a 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch SCSI device, is also available to allow for growth and expansion. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The IBM 3550 provides accessibility to numerous attachment cards, peripheral devices and communications options allowing solutions for most business applications. Two slots for cards, a bay for SCSI devices and various I/O ports are available in the unit. The following external ports are standard: o SCSI o Serial/Parallel o Keyboard o Pointing device o VGA. PRODUCT POSITIONING The IBM 3550 Expansion Unit Model 002 is for users of the IBM ThinkPad 700 PS/2 or the IBM ThinkPad 700C PS/2, who desire simplified connections to peripheral equipment, additional expansion capability and a familiar desktop environment. PLANNING INFORMATION CABLE ORDERS: No cables required. INSTALLABILITY: The IBM 3550 Expansion Unit Model 002 requires about 15 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking and setting up the unit, installing the computer and turning the unit on. Additional time is required to install options (adapter options and storage options). By following the setup instructions, the user unpacks the carton, sets up the computer using the Option Diskette, attaches any external devices, installs the computer into the unit, and turns on power. After the power-on self tests of the computer, the user is guided through configuring the computer and the expansion unit, using the automatic configuration program. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: The IBM 3550 does not have self-diagnostic capability. It is always diagnosed with a computer attached. If a failure is found, an instruction or error code will appear on the computer's screen or external display (if attached). The user should note this information and refer to the Installation and Operating Instructions supplied with the unit. The user is first requested to detach the computer and test the computer to isolate problems to the computer or expansion unit. If no computer problems are detected, the computer is reinstalled into the expansion unit and trouble shooting continues for the expansion unit. The trouble shooting procedures consist of a power-on self-test, diagnostics test and trouble shooting charts designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. Operating instructions and diagnostic procedures, which are included with supported options (adapter options, storage device options), help the customer in isolating any defective machine element. If expansion unit problems are identified, the user will be instructed to have the expansion unit serviced with the same computer to enable the service personnel to service the user's specific configuration. The failing element can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty or service provisions. PACKAGING: NUMBER OF PRODUCT CONTENTS BOXES IBM 3550/002 IBM 3550 Expansion Unit 1 Power Cord -- 6 feet (8) Publication Package (8) -- Installation and Operating Instructions -- System Programs License Agreement -- Option Diskette (1MB) (8) The shipment group contains a U.S. power cord (6 feet) and the Publication Package documentation is in U.S. English. SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL Security and auditability features of this product are: o Cover lock -- access to the internals of the unit are protected by a key lock. This prohibits unauthorized personnel access to any storage media and adapter cards installed. o System lock -- key holders have the ability of locking the notebook system into the IBM 3550 if they intend to leave it unattended. This prevents unauthorized removal of the system unit from the expansion unit. o Key controlled power -- power to the expansion unit can be controlled by a key holder. This means, one key position allows power to the unit whenever the power switch is activated and another position prohibits power to the switch without having a key. o Tie down capability -- this feature allows the owner to physically attach the unit to a desk, table, or similar fixture. A built-in security hook, located at the rear of the unit, allows the connection of a chain or cable to the unit.
