IBM WINDSURFER MCA COMMUNICATIONS ADAPTER AND WINDSURFER ENHANCEMENTS Contents Announcement Letter Number 193-314 dated October 18, 1993 US - Last Revised on October 18, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The WindSurfer MCA communications adapter will meet the requirements of customers who own or plan to buy an IBM PS/2 Micro Channel (R) system and want to save the expense and complexity of multiple, single function adapters. It is especially attractive to small business owners and home office entrepreneurs. The WindSurfer MCA adapter, with load-and-go software applications, should be marketed as a full-function 9600 bps FAX modem and 14,400 bps data modem, with multimedia potential in audio, including music synthesis and support for many Sound Blaster (1) applications running under a DOS full-screen session in Windows (2). The WindSurfer MCA communications functions will turn your IBM PS/2 (R) personal computer into a complete telecommunications workstation with high-speed, reliable, data modem and FAX, as well as versatile telephone messaging capabilities. The WindSurfer MCA adapter supports direct attachment to the public switched telephone network in both the US and Canada. All of the telephony function is supported through an analog telephone line connection. Hardware obsolescence becomes a thing of the past. The WindSurfer MCA adapter can easily acquire new functions, made possible by the Mwave (TM) technology platform through software upgrades. This is demonstrated today through the new enhancements for the previously announced IBM WindSurfer adapter compatible with ISA or EISA systems. The IBM WindSurfer communications adapter, previously announced on May 25, 1993 (IBM Product Announcement 193-141), will now include, at no extra charge the following additional functions: 14,400 bps data modem and support for many Sound Blaster applications running under a DOS full-screen session in Windows. These new functions are made possible through new software which will be shipped with the adapter. Customers who previously purchased the WindSurfer adapter will be able to obtain these enhancements at no charge from IBM. To enhance the musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) capabilities of both WindSurfer and WindSurfer MCA, IBM is also making available today the WindSurfer MIDI Pac. This offering will include a MIDI breakout cable which provides attachment to MIDI devices enabling the recording and playing of MIDI files. Also shipped are an expanded set of Prosonus sampled sounds and two applications, BAND-IN-A-BOX (3) and PowerTracks (3). Purchase Prices: o $499 (Adapter (MCA)) o 399 (Adapter) o 95 (MIDI Pac). BUSINESS SOLUTIONS COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE: In today's environment, every business requires a telephone, a FAX machine, and some form of phone greeting/message system, be it a secretary, voice messaging center, or a telephone answering machine. These functions are mandatory to be competitive in today's business environment. WindSurfer MCA provides these functions on one PC add-in adapter, making this product a cost-effective solution for the growing number of small business and home office users who need an integrated PC-based communications system. WindSurfer MCA is shipped with Trio DataFAX Lite for Windows and telephone answering function which allows the user to open up the package and immediately take advantage of WindSurfer MCA. Telecommuting is becoming more popular and is being highly promoted to reduce air pollution and allow for flexible working conditions. Today there are over two million users of online information systems such as PRODIGY, America Online (21), and CompuServ (22). These services are used for travel reservations, database access, news, home shopping and other applications that are growing. Included with the Mwave WindSurfer MCA is the PRODIGY service membership kit. INTEGRATION OF BUSINESS SOLUTIONS: The digital signal processor (DSP) used on the Mwave WindSurfer MCA adapter is a powerful microprocessor capable of running tasks concurrently. Combined with the power of the PC's processor, this creates an environment in which many activities can occur at the same time. This unique capability differentiates WindSurfer MCA from the many other PC adapters available today. In a typical office environment, it would be a snap for a WindSurfer MCA enhanced PC to be engaged in an interactive online session utilizing the modem capabilities of Windsurfer MCA, at the same time calculating a large spreadsheet (utilizing the systems main processor), all while listening to your favorite CD through the audio capabilities of WindSurfer MCA. GROWTH ENABLEMENT -- UPGRADE IMPROVEMENTS Another key feature of WindSurfer MCA is its upgradeability. The product's functions can be modified or enhanced by simply installing new software. Functions such as higher speed modem, caller ID, speech recognition, text-to-speech, image compression/ decompression via the standards established by the Joint Photographics Expert Group (JPEG), and even motion video acceleration could be provided, for an incremental cost, by installing new software. INVESTMENT PROTECTION -- ASSET PROTECTION Since new functions of WindSurfer MCA can be provided by installing new software features as they are available, there is no need for the customer to replace the hardware to obtain this new function. This ensures that the customer's investment is protected. (21) CompuServ is a registered trademark of CompuServ Incorporated. (22) America Online is a registered service mark of America Online.
