IBM ARTIC960 CO-PROCESSOR PLATFORM Contents Announcement Letter Number 193-258 dated September 7, 1993 US - Last Revised on September 7, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The ARTIC960 is a high-speed, high-throughput co-processor adapter with multiple memory options designed to operate in 32-bit Micro Channel (R) compatible systems. The ARTIC960 relieves the host from compute-intensive tasks associated with input/output (I/O) communication applications and protocols. It also provides bus-mastering capabilities for peer to peer transfers across the Micro Channel. The ARTIC960's wide bandwidth provides co-processor performance at least 4 to 6 times that of previously released IBM co-processors. Included in this announcement is a high-speed 4-Port Multi-interface Application Interface Board (AIB) that offers either EIA-232, EIA-530 (RS-422), ISO 4903 (X.21), or ISO 4902 (V.36) electrical interfaces for generalized applications. The selection of the specific interface is achieved by a matching cable (four ports of either 232, 422, X.21, or V.36). Purchase Price: See the Charges section. Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION The ARTIC960 is a high-speed, high-throughput co-processor adapter with multiple memory options. This adapter is installed in 32-bit Micro Channel compatible systems such as the PS/2 (R), the RISC System/6000 (R), and IBM Industrial Computers. The ARTIC960 relieves the host from compute-intensive tasks associated with I/O communication applications and protocols. It also provides bus-mastering capabilities for peer to peer transfers across the Micro Channel. The ARTIC960's wide bandwidth provides co-processor performance at least 4 to 6 times that of previously released IBM co-processors. Included in this announcement is a high-speed 4-Port Multi-interface AIB that offers either EIA-232, EIA-530 (RS-422), ISO 4903 (X.21), or ISO 4902 (V.36) electrical interfaces for generalized applications. The selection of the specific interface is achieved by a matching cable (four ports of either 232, 422, X.21, or V.36). The ARTIC960 with its optional daughter card is a complete feature marketed through the IBM channels. The base card is also purchased as a co-processor platform by third-party IBM Business Partners who will provide design-specific applications via their own AIB daughter cards. A Developer's Kit is offered that provides an AIB Developer's Guide and application program information that includes sample programs, a programmer's guide/reference, and a hardware technical reference manual. As part of the Developer's Kit a Developer's Assistance Program (DAP) provides technical question and answer service supported by telephone and E-mail. The ARTIC960 is ideally suited for applications in credit card banking, satellite high-speed data retrieval, telephony, airline reservation systems, and graphic imaging, and for network routers and generalized local area network (LAN) applications ranging from X.25 to integrated services digital network (ISDN) to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). INCREASED PROCESSOR PERFORMANCE AND COMMUNICATION SPEEDS The ARTIC960 provides a 4-6 times increase in data throughput across the Micro Channel when compared to the existing family of IBM co-processors. The 4-Port Multi-interface Application Interface Board handles four lines of communications data at 2.048 megabits per second. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS -- ENABLING THE CUSTOMER'S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE The ARTIC960 performance improvements allow users to install one adapter where four adapters would be required of previous IBM co-processor designs. Four 2.048 megabits per second. high-speed communication lines, not available on previous IBM co-processors, provide increased bandwidth capabilities for customer applications.
