IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 FAXCONCENTRATOR ADAPTER/A Contents Announcement Letter Number 190-118 dated August 21, 1990 US - Last Revised on August 21, 1990 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) FaxConcentrator (TM) Adapter/A is a high function microprocessor based fax adapter that can provide voice prompting, telephone tone detection, and optical mark recognition functions when used with a suitable application program. Features of the PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A allow real-time processing of tasks such as compression (Image to Group 3), decompression, and format conversions (Group 3 to Group 4) within the adapter, as opposed to doing these tasks with software in the PS/2 main processor. The PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A, when used with a suitable application program, allows the PS/2 Micro Channel (R) architecture family of computers to communicate with Group 3 facsimile devices over the public switched telephone network for the purpose of routing fax data. The PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A is announced to support the IBM Facsimile Support/400 program offering for the PS/2, although it can be used with suitably developed programs for other PS/2 applications. Planned Availability: January 1991. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o New business solution potential exists, with applications in combination with the Personal System/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A, to capitalize on the impressive growth of the facsimile machine market. o Productivity gains can be achieved through the use of a suitable application program, by allowing users at a remote location to access and reroute fax documents sent to their resident fax location, or send fax documents from the remote location using a predefined distribution list accessible in the FaxConcentrator. o With the ability to install up to eight PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/As in one system, customers can plan for growth. o Customers' investments in Group 3 facsimile products will be protected because the PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A adheres to the CCITT Group 3 standards. o Systems management and ease-of-use features of the Personal System/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A such as voice prompting, optical mark recognition (OMR) for automated routing, and telephone tone detection for end-user and application interaction can be used by a suitable application program. o The Application Programming Interface (API), as documented in the Personal System/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A Extended Device Driver Reference, provides the documentation needed to develop applications that make use of the advanced functions provided by the Personal System/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A. o The PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A supports Error Correction Mode (ECM), a Group 3 extension feature, for more reliable communication with fax machines, which also support ECM. DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The exceptional increase in fax machine usage has created an opportunity for computer-based fax products. The PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A, along with a suitable application program, enhances the use of stand-alone fax machines because of the additional broadcast and store/forward capabilities that can be provided by the IBM PS/2. The PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A, along with a suitably developed application program, can provide additional functions such as voice prompting, OMR (for automated routing), and telephone tone recognition for user interaction with the application. Features of the PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A allow real-time processing of tasks such as compression (Image to Group 3), decompression, and format conversions (Group 3 to Group 4) on the adapter, as opposed to burdening the PS/2 processor with these tasks. USER PRODUCTIVITY The PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A, along with the development of suitable application programs, allow users to be productive, even while remote from their resident business location. With the aid of voice prompting, the user may access the FaxConcentrator by entering instructions to the system from a telephone keypad. An example follows: o SENDING The user may choose to send fax documents to predefined distribution lists, previously stored within the PS/2. For increased productivity, multiple copies of a document can be transmitted simultaneously via multiple adapters. o RECEIVING The user can, with the help of voice prompts and input via the telephone keypad or by means of OMR, reroute incoming fax documents for receipt at a remote site. GROWTH ENABLEMENT Growth potential is realized with the ability to install up to eight PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter As (depending on available slots). The customer has the ability to increase the amount of fax traffic handled. The on-board processor and design features of the adapter enable additional adaptors to be installed, while maintaining maximum facsimile transmission speeds. INVESTMENT PROTECTION Customers' investments in Group 3 facsimile products will be protected because the Personal System/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A adheres to the CCITT Group 3 standard. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT With the development of suitable application programs, the ease-of-use attributes of the PS/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A, such as voice prompting and telephone tone detection, can simplify the interaction between the end user and the application program. Also with an appropriate application program, effective user interaction can be achieved using OMR for automatic routing of fax documents. The Application Program Interface (API), as documented in the Personal System/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A Extended Device Driver Reference, provides the documentation needed to develop applications that take advantage of the advanced functions of the Personal System/2 FaxConcentrator Adapter/A.
