POWERservers MUST have a console. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000, 5756-030 with the current update available at the planned availability date. COMPATIBILITY: The POWERstation/POWERserver 550 uses the same external interfaces as the POWERstation/POWERserver 520, 530 and 540. MODEL CONVERSIONS Customers of the POWERstation/POWERserver 540 will be able to convert their systems to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 550S. IBM fixed disk configurations supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 540 upon announcement will be supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 550S. In addition, the POWERstation/POWERserver 550S will support the new IBM 800 MB SCSI Disk Drive Pair. All Micro Channel cards, external and internal devices supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 550 upon announcement will be supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 550S. The POWERstation/POWERserver 550S requires a minimum of 64MB of memory. Memory increments are available in multiples of 64 and 128MB with a maximum of 512MB after the availability of the 64MB card in June 1991. The Model Conversion involves the conversion of the customer's existing memory to be compatible with the new 41MHz POWERstation/POWERserver 550 processor board. The customer will be provided with the new memory in the same configuration (MB per card) and the same number of cards as their pre-conversion memory configuration. System performance of the POWERstation/POWERserver 550S relative to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 550 will depend upon the installed fixed disks. Customers whose converted machine contains only IBM fixed disk configurations supported by the new POWERstation/POWERserver 550 should not experience performance degradation. Retention in the converted machines of IBM fixed disks not supported by the new POWERstation/POWERserver 550 will yield a degradation in system performance relative to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 550, varying with the nature of the customer's applications (compute intensive versus I/O intensive). This offers a high degree of flexibility in increasing the performance level of the system and helping customers with compute intensive applications to take advantage of the performance of the new processor while protecting their investment in fixed disks. The Model Conversion MES contains the following items and is ordered through the HONE configurator: o Processor replacement o Memory conversion o New labels o Installation instructions o New Diagnostics. NOTE: Parts removed become the property of IBM. LIMITATIONS: There are eight memory card slots. While converting to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 550S, the system will contain the same number of memory cards and megabytes per card as in the original system. Maximum memory capacity of a conversion to a POWERstation/POWERserver 550S will be dependant on the original memory configuration of the converted POWERstation/POWERserver 540. The customer may choose to replace the converted memory by purchasing additional higher density memory cards to take full advantage of the maximum capacity of 512MB. PLANNING INFORMATION CABLE ORDERS: No cables required. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: For problem analysis, the IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 550 diagnostic programs, preloaded on the system, provide console routines that lead a user through problem determination and help provide direction to resolve problems.
