IBM XSTATION 130 Announcement Letter Number 191-027 dated March 12, 1991 US - Last Revised on March 12, 1991 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The new IBM Xstation 130 is an advanced function local area network (LAN)-attached X server that provides better performance than the Xstation 120 by incorporating a more powerful graphics processor and additional system and video memory. An integrated Ethernet port is standard. The Xstation 130 may be connected to two LANs simultaneously using either the optional Token-Ring adapter or a second optional Ethernet adapter. Attachment support is also provided for a wide variety of displays, printers, plotters, and modems, and for a 30MB direct attach disk drive to provide local initial program load capability and memory caching. The Xstation 130 requires that AIX (R) Xstation Manager (TM)/6000 Version 1.2 be installed on a RISC System/6000 (TM) host or other suitable host to download the Xstation supervisor, Xserver 11.4 software, and font files. Refer to Programming Announcement 291-097, dated March 12, 1991. Planned Availability Date: April 26, 1991. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Provides advanced function and increased performance as compared to the Xstation 120 with a lower-cost alternative to an intelligent workstation in an X Window System (1) environment o Protects the customer's investment through compatibility with the current Xstation 120 and AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 operating system and the AIX Xstation Manager/6000 software o Improves performance through the use of a 32-bit processor o Supports a wide range of optional features and devices to efficiently manage the customer's growth requirements (1) Trademark of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The IBM Xstation 130 supports the customer's business objectives by providing a relatively low cost advanced function X Windows terminal that is LAN-attached. The Xstation 130 is designed to meet the rigorous windowing and graphics requirements of most users. Supporting these requirements is a variety of resolutions and screen sizes on both gray-scale and color monitors. Xstation response, display, and window management functions can be further enhanced by the addition of optional system and video memory. In addition, a wide variety of input/output devices is available to help provide increased function, extensive connectivity, and graphics support. The Xstation 130 can be configured in a LAN environment for a wide range of business solutions. The Xstation 130 can be LAN-attached to an AIX host, a non-AIX host, or a non-IBM host that supports X Window Systems Version 11 Release 3 or Version 11 Release 4. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The IBM Xstation 130 is binary compatible with the previously announced IBM Xstation 120, AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000, AIXwindows (TM) Environment/6000 Release 1, and IBM AIX Xstation Manager/6000 Release 2. This compatibility aspect helps protect the customer's investment in software, hardware, and training. In addition, the IBM Xstation 130 supports X Windows System Version 11 Release 3 or Version 11 Release 4. Savings can be realized in end-user training and application development compatible with either Release 3 or Release 4 of the Xlib and Xclient application running on the host. USER PRODUCTIVITY In a LAN-based X Windows environment, the X Windows protocol allows the separation of computing function (at the host) from user interaction (at the X server station). From the IBM Xstation 130, the user can control and view multiple applications concurrently. The IBM Xstation 130 has a dual processor system that provides an efficient display and LAN communication functions. The dual processor approach improves system performance by using one processor to reduce LAN overhead, and provides rapid keyboard response and mouse tracking. The second processor is used for X protocol and graphics processing. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The IBM Xstation 130 is designed to grow with the customer's needs. The standard 2MB of system memory can be increased to 16MB of system memory. The 1MB of video memory can be increased to 2MB of video memory for additional graphics capabilities. For growth in LAN connections, a second optional Ethernet network adapter or an optional Token-Ring adapter may be installed in the IBM Xstation 130, allowing the system to be connected to two local area networks simultaneously. The 30 MB Disk Drive option is primarily intended for applications that require significant off-screen pixel resources. This type of application uses Xstation memory to store the images so that the screen refresh happens locally as opposed to being refreshed over the network. Holding an image in the Xstation that is much larger than the viewed image is another example of an application that uses large off-screen pixel resources. The 30 MB Disk Drive option is a less expensive solution than system memory for these large storage applications. Secondary uses for the 30 MB Disk Drive option include: local initial program load (IPL), local font cache, and automatic backing store of all windows. The IBM Xstation 130 native ports will support a wide range of the IBM RISC System/6000 supported printers as well as other serial input/output (I/O) devices to meet the customer's growth requirements. Two serial ports are standard, and additional serial ports can be added using the PS/2 (R) Dual Async Adapter/A feature (#2925, 6451013). The integrated display adapter in the Xstation 130 is capable of attaching a wide range of IBM display monitors. The IBM 8512 and 8513 offer a VGA level of resolution (640 x 480) and are the lowest-priced color offerings. They are 14-inch and 12-inch respectively. The IBM 8515 offers higher resolution (1024 x 768) color in a small 14-inch screen size, and the IBM 8514 provides the same (1024 x 768) resolution in a larger, easier-to-read 16-inch screen size. The IBM 5081-16 provides an even higher resolution (1280 x 1024) color display for those customers who need technical-workstation-like resolution but in a compact 16-inch screen size. If a larger screen is required, the 6091-19 provides a 19-inch screen with 1280 x 1024 resolution. There is also a range of monochrome monitors that can be attached to the IBM Xstation 130 to operate in a gray-scale mode. The IBM 8503 is the lowest-cost monitor, offering 640 x 480 resolution in a 12-inch screen size. The IBM 8507 provides higher resolution (1024 x 768) in a 19-inch screen. Higher gray-scale resolution (1280 x 1024) is available with the IBM 8508 19-inch screen, which can be configured to provide 1600 x 1200 resolution.
