Systems management is provided with a combination of hardware and software innovations that together provide the customer with the tools necessary to manage large complex LANs running mission critical applications. Key features include an 80C186-based battery-backed Remote Maintenance Processor (RMP). This is a single-board processor that comes standard with each system. It provides non-intrusive local and remote server monitoring, configuration tuning, control and unattended failure recover capabilities. The PS/2 Server 295 is ideally suited as an application database server for mission critical applications. Allowing many clients fast reliable access to this data enhances the productivity of the entire customer organization. Because the PS/2 Server 295 supports OS/2, DOS or Windows clients, as well as NetWare Requesters for OS/2, customers can install the PS/2 Server 295 into current environments without going through time consuming and expensive application conversions. MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY AND SUPPORT SYSTEM/2: MASS/2, an OS/2 based software application working with the Remote Maintenance Processor (RMP) on the PS/2 Server 295, provides a graphical interface for managing functions, such as automatic reboot and reconfiguration, comprehensive error logging, selective error notification including dial-out capability, fail-safe access in case of power outage, remote power cycling and system configuration, warning alarms, user and administrative password security, and remote console capabilities. With MASS/2, the PS/2 Server 295 can be geographically distributed across large organizations while retaining the ability to be managed in a centralized support location. MASS/2 provides continual monitoring of resources and system critical parameters. In addition, remote power cycling and system configuration control, as well as alarm parameters, are all possible with the comprehensive system management capabilities. NOTE: MASS/2, a prerequisite, is required to fully utilize the system architecture, is preloaded for each PS/2 Server 295, and must be ordered separately. For more information on MASS/2, refer to Programming Announcement 292-302, dated June 2, 1992. USER PRODUCTIVITY The PS/2 Server 295 is a build-to-order system with IBM hardware and software options installed and tested at the IBM manufacturing site. This means less time spent on configuration and more time to devote to customer applications. RELIABILITY AND AVAILABILITY: This system is designed for high reliability and availability to the clients, while at the same time provides an easy-to-use comprehensive system management tool (MASS/2) for the system administrator. Reliability is designed into the system by enabling redundant components. For example, subsystems such as processors, SCSI, memory, disk drive and power can be configured to be redundant through selection of various options available on the PS/2 Server 295. High availability is ensured through a combination of hardware and software. The ability to configure redundant hardware subsystems, combined with the capabilities of the system management software (MASS/2) to detect failures and continue to run without human intervention, provides powerful tools to maximize system availability for clients on the LAN. This high availability translates into higher customer productivity for all users across the LAN. MULTIPROCESSOR DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE: The multiprocessor design of the server employs one or two 486/33 or 486/50 processors, or a combination of the two, connected to a high-speed 200MB per second, 64-bit wide parity protected bus. The processors employ a second level cache of 128KB or 256KB and communicate to memory via four independent memory controllers. The system can support up to 128MB of ECC main memory and 28GB of mass storage supported by two RISC SCSI controllers and four SCSI buses providing the customer with a variety of expansion choices and high reliability. Another key feature to improved performance is the unique IBM Orthogonal Raid-5 Disk Array/2 product. This software not only provides high performance with RAID-5 levels of data protection; but, in conjunction with the MASS/2 software, can even protect against failures of a SCSI controller or channel. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The PS/2 Server 295 can protect the customer's investment in several ways. First, it is a build-to-order system that allows the customer to purchase the configuration to meet specific requirements. The customer can spend current dollars to solve current problems and expand as needed in the future. Once installed, the PS/2 Server 295 is designed to grow to meet changing needs. For example, memory up to 128MB is supported and can be added in increments of 32MB. Disk drive storage of 400MB up to 28GB is available with configuration increments of 400MB or 1GB. Customers can start out with a single processor and grow to multiprocessing later when needs change. The system has 12 Micro Channel slots (8/4 per channel), which allow the customer expansion capability and the opportunity to provide hardware backup should a critical option card experience a failure. OS/2 compatibility provides further investment protection by ensuring that the customer's applications can be supported across all of the LANs in the enterprise and that software enhancements can occur with minimal training costs. FEATURES The following features are unique to the PS/2 Server 295. These features are field installable. o IBM 486-33 System Processor Module: Second processor feature can be ordered with either model of the 8600. SUMMARY The new PS/2 Server 295 is designed to provide high levels of performance and reliability as an application server in mission critical environments. The PS/2 Server 295 combines both hardware and software (refer to Programming Announcement 292-302, dated June 2, 1992) to ensure high reliability and performance with comprehensive system management capabilities. The combination of multiprocessing 486 CPUs with highly efficient disk drive and memory subsystems ensures sufficient power for expected performance. In addition, the MASS/2 software, prerequisite for the PS/2 Server 295, provides innovative system management and error recovery capabilities. The Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 software supports multiple arrays of up to 16 disks, each providing high capacity, performance and reliability. The system can recover from a disk or SCSI failure and continue to operate without intervention and, in many cases, the clients never know a failure has occurred. In addition to RAID-5 capability, the system is able to utilize disks from an online spares pool to reconstruct the array to its original configuration without interruption to client services. The MASS/2 software provides the system administrator with the system status, error warnings, configuration control, reboot capability and whether the PS/2 Server 295 is in the same room or across the country. This capability is essential for centralized control of enterprise LANs or for remote diagnostic assistance. With the PS/2 Server 295 operating as a remote server, its ability to identify problems, correct the error and keep running is a key attribute of the system. The PS/2 Server 295 not only corrects system problems without intervention, but alerts the systems administrator, whether remote or local, to the nature of the problem so corrective service, if required, can be scheduled later. Because the PS/2 Server 295 comes with a standard modem, IBM service personnel will be able to provide extensive online diagnostic assistance should the need arise. STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION: IBM intends to support OS/2 2.0 in the fourth quarter of 1992 and NetWare in the first half of 1993 on the PS/2 Server 295.
