The systems are adapted for connection to a LAN by the inclusion of either a 16/4 Token-Ring Network Adapter/A or an Adapter/A for Ethernet networks. Through the LAN, the system can be connected to selected PS/2 (R) models, equipped with disk storage, that provide program and data storage and other services to the LAN. The Model 55 LS is provided without a diskette drive or fixed disk, but may be upgraded with the addition of a 1.44MB diskette drive and/or a 30MB or 60MB fixed disk. The Model 55 LS is supported by DOS as a client to either PC LAN Program or OS/2 (R) LAN Server using Remote Program Load in a Token-Ring network. Software support in an Ethernet network is provided by DOS as a client to independent software vendor LAN operating systems using Remote Program Load. Statement of Direction: The IBM OS/2 LAN Server currently supports Remote Program Load of DOS in a Token-Ring network. In addition, IBM intends to enhance the IBM OS/2 LAN Server to support Remote Program Load of OS/2 in a Token-Ring network and Remote Program Load of both DOS and OS/2 in an Ethernet network. DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The PS/2 Model 55 LS supports the customer's business objectives by providing a cost-effective LAN station solution for either Token-Ring or Ethernet networks. The 16MHz 80386SX microprocessor provides the 32-bit compatibility required by many customers. The Micro Channel architecture offers fast, efficient, and reliable data flow with a large selection of optional adapters. The PS/2 Model 55 LS with its optional features and compatible operating systems and applications provides a solution for a wide range of applications. It, along with other systems of the PS/2 family, can provide a total client/server system solution. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT Because the PS/2 Model 55 LS is without media, it provides benefits in the area of systems management. System security is improved because data cannot be removed or entered from diskettes at the workstation. Software and data is stored at the server providing one central facility for maintenance and backup. Consistent software program levels and data files may be maintained for all users on the server. Additional security features, such as passwords and the ability to select the IPL source, improve control of system usage. The cover lock and bolt down features help prevent theft of the system and options. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The high degree of compatibility of the PS/2 Model 55 LS protects the investment the customer has made in PS/2 hardware and software. An extensive list of Micro Channel options is supported. The system may be upgraded with the addition of a 1.44MB diskette drive or a 30MB or 60MB fixed disk drive. The DOS operating system and compatible software are supported. (IBM intends to enhance the OS/2 LAN Server to support Remote Program Load of OS/2.) GROWTH ENABLEMENT The PS/2 Model 55 LS supports application development and growth through expansion features. The standard 2MB of memory may be expanded to 8MB on the system board and to 16MB using memory expansion options. Two available 16-bit Micro Channel slots allow the addition of options for additional applications. The 1.44MB diskette option and 30MB or 60MB fixed disk options provide growth if local DASD is required on the LAN station. USER PRODUCTIVITY The PS/2 Model 55 LS increases user productivity by providing a 32-bit microprocessor for improved computing performance when compared to 8- and 16-bit microprocessors. The highly reliable workstation (without media) improves the availability to the user of the workstation. The system is easily installed because the LAN adapter, either the 16/4 Token-Ring Adapter or the Ethernet Adapter, as well as other features such as keyboard port and keyboard, pointing device port, video graphics array (VGA) port, serial port, and parallel port, are supplied with the system. The file server may be any Personal System/2 with a LAN adapter and operating system that supports Remote Program Load, and with sufficient storage and performance to support the required number of workstations. The server must be equipped to read these diskette formats and must have an operating system that supports the creation of a reference diskette image and Remote Program Load of the client workstation. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: The PS/2 Model 55 LS (without a diskette or fixed disk) as a client workstation requires the appropriate operating systems software for both the server and the client workstation. Applications that operate on the PS/2 in the Token-Ring or Ethernet environment should operate on the PS/2 Model 55 LS substantially as described in the program documentation. Programs that use file interfaces that do not allow redirecting I/O to the LAN file server will not operate on the PS/2 Model 55 LS. LIMITATIONS: The PS/2 Model 55 LS must be attached to a 4Mbps or 16Mbps Token-Ring LAN or Ethernet network and appropriate file server supporting Remote Program Load, if the optional diskette or fixed disk have not been installed. It supports a maximum of 16MB of memory. 128KB of memory is used by high performance BIOS. An additional 256KB is reserved for system use in systems with 16MB of memory. Some optional adapters require the use of an initialization program, which is stored on the fixed disk. These adapters are supported by the PS/2 Model 55 LS, only when the system initial program load is from the optional fixed disk. Refer to the attached List of Supported Products for the IBM options supported by the Model 55 LS. Because the PS/2 Model 55 LS is provided with a LAN adapter with Remote Program Load, Remote Program Load from a second adapter is not supported. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The PS/2 Model 55 LS is designated as a customer setup machine. Customers are responsible for providing the local area network and server required by the PS/2 Model 55 LS. They are also responsible for creating the reference diskette image on the server, which is required to setup and test the Model 55 LS. CABLE ORDERS: Customers are responsible for planning and installing the cabling required for the local area network connection between the PS/2 Model 55 LS and the server. Cables are provided for system power, keyboard, and display connection and cabling instructions are provided as part of initial setup. INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard and peripherals. Power is then turned on and the system attempts a Remote Program Load from the server after it has successfully completed its initial self-tests. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction will appear on the screen. If the test is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the server. If the server is unavailable, the system will continue attempting to load an operating system until powered off. If the LAN link is unavailable due to the cable being unplugged, the system will display an error on the screen. Additional diagnostics must be downloaded from the server to perform problem determination on optional features installed in the PS/2 Model 55 LS.
