PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL 55 SX AND 80387SX MATH CO-PROCESSOR IBM Announcement Letter Number 189-076 dated May 9, 1989 IBM US - Last Revised on May 9, 1989 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The Model 55 SX enhances the Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) family of systems by offering 32-bit microprocessor compatibility at a price range previously assigned to 16-bit 80286 systems. The desktop system has Micro Channel (TM) Architecture with a 16MHz 80386SX 32-bit microprocessor, high density memory technology, and a wide range of integrated features. With the capability of supporting up to 16Mb of high-speed real memory, 30Mb or 60Mb of disk storage, advanced graphics, and an optional 80387SX Math Co-Processor, this system provides significant performance improvements for 80286 users. The systems maintain compatibility with most existing 8- and 16-bit software for IBM personal computer systems such as IBM Disk Operating System (DOS) and Operating System/2 (TM) (OS/2 (TM)). Statement of Direction: The Model 55 SX (8555-061 only) will be supported by a future release of Advanced Interactive Executive (AIX (TM)) PS/2. The availability date of this release will be announced third quarter 1989. Purchase Prices: Model 55 SX (8555-031) $3,895 Model 55 SX (8555-061) 4,295 80387SX Math Co-Processor (27F4676) 795 Planned Availability Date: May 9, 1989 (R) Registered trademark of the International Business Machines Corporation. (TM) Trademark of the International Business Machines Corporation. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o 16MHz 80386SX 32-bit microprocessor o 2Mb of memory expandable to 16Mb with memory options o 30Mb or 60Mb fixed disk with integrated controller o Micro Channel Architecture with three 16-bit slots o Optional 16MHz 80387SX Co-Processor o Ergonomic desktop design o Ease of installation and configuration. DESCRIPTION The IBM Personal System/2 Model 55 SX offers a new level of price/performance in a desktop unit. The system features a 386SX (1) microprocessor and 2Mb of high-speed memory expandable to 16Mb with memory options. The 386SX microprocessor is a 32-bit CPU with a 16-bit external data bus and a 24-bit external address bus. The 386SX CPU brings the high-performance 32-bit software operating on the Intel 386 (1) architecture to mid-range systems. (1) Trademark of Intel Corporation. The Model 55 SX comes standard with: o 1.44Mb, 3.5-inch diskette drive o Fixed disk drive with integrated controller o Keyboard port o Pointing device port o Serial/asynchronous port o Parallel port o Video Graphics Array (VGA) port o Three 16-bit I/O slots o Keyboard. The VGA port supports graphics and text modes including 640 x 480 graphics, 320 x 200 graphics in 256 colors, and 720 x 400 text, and maintains compatibility with Color Graphics Adapter (CGA) and Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) modes. The fixed disk drive has a capacity of 30Mb or 60Mb. The fixed disk controller is integrated with the drive. DRIVE SPECIFICATIONS: Capacity 30Mb 60Mb Bytes/sector 512 512 Sectors/track 25 26 Cylinders 615 762 Number of heads 4 6 Data transfer rate 7.5M bps 8.4M bps Average access time 39ms 27ms Sector interleave 1:1 1:1 The system has two levels of BIOS that total 128Kb. The Compatibility BIOS (CBIOS) with memory addressability of up to 1Mb provides compatible support for current application programs. An additional version of BIOS, Advanced BIOS (ABIOS), provides support for multitasking operating systems and has extended memory addressability up to 16Mb. The high level of feature integration on the system board reduces the requirement for optional adapters. There are two memory connectors on the system board. The connectors are populated with two 1Mb memory modules on the 8555-031. The 1Mb memory modules may be replaced by 2Mb memory modules to increase the system board memory to 3Mb or 4Mb. One of the two memory connectors is populated by a 2Mb memory module on the 8555-061. 1Mb or 2Mb of memory may be added using the second connector to increase the system board memory to 3Mb or 4Mb. The optional 80387SX Math Co-Processor provides enhanced performance in arithmetic calculations. In addition, the system is designed for easy installation and includes an external keylock and security features in BIOS/CMOS. Additional features of the system unit include three 16-bit I/O slots (one 16-bit bus slot with video extension), a 90-watt power supply, a time and date clock with a built-in battery, and the IBM Enhanced Personal Computer Keyboard. IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 16MHZ 80387SX MATH CO-PROCESSOR (#4676) (27F4676): The 16MHz 80387SX Math Co-Processor provides additional processing power and performance for application programs requiring many or repetitive arithmetic calculations. The 80386SX/80387SX conforms to the ANSI/IEEE floating-point standard and runs most applications written for the 80386/80387, 80286/80287, and 8088/8087 based systems, unmodified. This option is installed in the Math Co-Processor socket on the system board and does not require an expansion slot. Installation of this feature should be performed by a technically skilled person.
