IBM GEARBOX MODEL 800 (7568-D40) IBM Announcement Letter Number 192-217 dated September 15, 1992 IBM US - Last Revised on September 15, 1992 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The new D40 model of the GEARBOX (R) Model 800 system further expands the family of GEARBOX industrial computers. This latest member of the GEARBOX product line provides a new processor card containing an Intel 486 (1) DX2 microprocessor operating at 50MHz, which offers improved processor throughput speed. With the D40, the GEARBOX line now supports up to 32MB of error correcting code memory, the Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) XGA (R) Display Adapter/A, and up to four internal SCSI fixed disk drives. New fixed disk drive features are now available in both 400MB (million bytes) and 1004MB (1.0GB) capacities. As in the past, these enhancements are also available as customer-installed features so that previously installed Model 800 systems can be improved to the new functional capabilities. The D40 continues to offer the extended environment and high-availability attributes provided by the GEARBOX line of products. In addition, the GEARBOX Model 800 now also supports installation of an IBM FDDI Workstation Base Adapter (either fiber or copper), in a single attach station configuration. The D40 model and new features are recommended when enhanced system performance or capability is needed, or when future growth is anticipated. Planned Availability Date: October 23, 1992. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Expanded capability for CIM Advantage (R) business solutions o Increased processor throughput speed, larger memory and increased fixed disk capacity results in higher direct-user productivity o Increased processor speed, larger memory and increased fixed disk capacity provide the opportunity for application growth on a given system o Investment protection through compatibility with previous GEARBOX Model 800 hardware and software products (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The new D40 model of the GEARBOX Model 800 provides increased system function and improved price/performance. Along with the capability to protect against loss of fixed disk drive content, this improvement will allow use of the GEARBOX technology in additional applications and areas that may not have been considered in the past, because of concerns over system performance limitations, cost, or inability to protect critical data. The overall attributes of the GEARBOX system and the related Language Extension products can now be used more extensively as a part of the business solutions available through CIM Advantage software products. The improved GEARBOX capabilities allows an expanded use of these products in the demanding environments of the plant floor and other difficult applications. USER PRODUCTIVITY The enhanced 80486 processor and supported graphics speed, and the increased memory and fixed disk drive capacity will improve system response time and broaden the list of compatible applications, providing increased user productivity compared to the predecessor C40 system. The ability of the installed 7568 systems to accept the newly enhanced functions, as customer-installed features, demonstrates the continuing adaptability of the GEARBOX technology. GROWTH ENABLEMENT Introduction of the improved processor card, larger memory and increased disk drive capacity will enable customer growth on a given system. This allows the new and installed Model 800 systems to be adapted to new customer and market applications where the higher performance is required. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The new processor card, larger memory and increased fixed disk capacity are available as customer installed features and are compatible with previously installed Model 800 systems and software. In this way the existing customer investment in GEARBOX hardware, software and personnel training is fully protected. In addition, the Model 800 can now serve in an expanded role because of its performance improvement and compatibility with key Micro Channel (R) features. This means the investment of the customer, in PS/2- and OS/2 (R)-compatible application products, is also protected, as those products can be migrated to the Model 800 platform for use in areas that are unsuited for the standard PS/2 product line. The disk drive recovery capability, provided by the OASAS software and increased disk drive support, offers investment protection that can be used on a daily basis to protect critical information from loss, without network backup solutions. This provides a means of avoiding lost information and expensive recovery activity. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Lastly, since the new system has improved growth potential for expanded or new applications, the customer investment is more secure into the future. The risk of leaving the GEARBOX platform to move to a higher performance system is significantly reduced. PRODUCT POSITIONING The announced model, features and customer upgrade capabilities significantly increase the performance and growth potential for the GEARBOX Model 800 system. Improved system performance provides an enhanced business solution capability and increased user productivity. Increased system growth potential protects user investment through compatibility with earlier Model 800 systems, and by providing a system that can continue to meet user requirements well into the future. These improvements offer significant advantages over previous GEARBOX Model 800 models and provide a product with enhanced price-performance. MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: The GEARBOX Model 800 requires an analog display (IBM Industrial Displays 7544, 7554, or equivalent) for initial system set up. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: Operating system software must be provided for the GEARBOX Model 800 (7568-D40) system. The following levels of IBM operating system products are compatible with the 7568-D40: o IBM DOS, Version 5.0 (2) o OS/2 Standard Edition (SE), Version 1.30.2 (2) o OS/2 Extended Edition (EE), Version 1.30.2 (2) o OS/2 Version 2.0 o Extended Services for OS/2, Version 1.0 o OS/2 LAN Server Version 2.0 -- Entry (for OS/2 SE Versions 1.3 and 2.0) o OS/2 LAN Server Version 2.0 -- Advanced (for OS/2 SE Version 1.3) o AIX (R) PS/2, Version 1.2.1 (Requires PTF Level 210800, or later). (2) While the D40 system may be generally compatible with selected earlier versions of these operating systems, the earlier levels are no longer formally supported by IBM. In addition, certain D40 system hardware capabilities may not be supported by such earlier versions (for example, DOS Version 3.3 supports no more than two fixed disk drives). Also note that the use of OS/2 SE and EE Versions 1.2 and 1.3 will result in a "system hang" problem when Control-Alt-Delete (C-A-D) is entered. If C-A-D is entered, the system must be reset or powered down and restarted. This is the same as on the previous C40 system. GEARBOX Language Extensions are available for various operating systems. Language Extensions provide the ability to take full advantage of the unique error notification and orderly shutdown/startup capabilities of the GEARBOX Model 800 system. One of these products may be ordered as part of the system order. Available products are: o GEARBOX Language Extensions for PC DOS o GEARBOX Language Extensions for OS/2 o GEARBOX Language Extensions for AIX PS/2. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. COMPATIBILITY: The 7568-D40 product is compatible with earlier models of the GEARBOX Model 800. The new 486 DX2 50MHz Processor Card is compatible with and may be installed in earlier versions of the Model 800. Full support for 8MB memory modules and for system memory greater than 16MB requires that this feature be installed in earlier Model 800 systems. The 7568-D40, and earlier systems with the 486 DX2 50MHz Processor Card installed, do not support the 0-16MB Extended Memory Adapter (#6345), (no longer available as of May 4, 1992). Initial setup and loading of diagnostic software on the D40 system with no DASD require the use of the Setup and Service Device (#6230). Installation of supported PS/2 form factor Micro Channel adapters in the GEARBOX Model 800 system require the use of the applicable interposer card to interface with the system backplane. Available interposer cards are feature numbers 6224, 6225 and 6875. Support for the PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A requires that the System Resource Card Graphics Support Upgrade (#6886) be installed on earlier models of the GEARBOX Model 800. Support for the XGA Display Adapter/A (and for all other adapters that exclusively use 32-bit slots) also requires that the 32-Bit Micro Channel Adapter Interposer (#6875) be used when installing these adapters. Using a 16-Bit Micro Channel Adapter feature (#6224) may lead to functional problems related to a specific adapter's use of a memory block above the 16MB level. Adapters that require 32-bit slots should be used only with the 32-Bit Micro Channel Adapter Interposer. The 32-bit Micro Channel adapters that can be installed in either 16- or 32-bit slots may have improved functional performance if they are installed using a 32-Bit Micro Channel Adapter Interposer. Installation of the 7568 Auxiliary DASD Module is supported only in C40 or D40 systems, or in 040 or 150 systems that have had either the 80486 Processor Card Upgrade Kit (#6543) or the 486 DX2 50MHz Processor Card Upgrade (#6872) installed on the system. Installation of the 7568 Auxiliary DASD Module also requires that the base system have a Disk Module installed, either as part of the original system or as the Disk Module feature (#6222). Installation of the 400MB or 1.0GB SCSI Fixed Disk Drives (#6873 and #6874 respectively) in earlier 040 or 150 systems requires Reference Diskette Version 1.20 for proper setup and diagnostic support. The Version 1.20 level was provided on all systems shipped after December 21, 1990, and was also available through RPQ PF1193, which could be ordered from December 1990, through July 1991. Diagnostics for these systems does not report the capacity of a defective disk drive. LIMITATIONS: ATTACHMENT SUPPORT FOR PS/2 PRODUCTS -- ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITS: Support for attachment of the PS/2 3.5-inch Rewritable Optical Drive in the PS/2 SCSI Storage Enclosure requires that all operating environment conditions be within the limits defined for that product. (Refer to Product Announcements 191-082, dated June 6, 1991, and 191-053, dated April 23, 1991, and Sales Manual information for these products.) SYSTEM MEMORY INFORMATION AND LIMITATIONS: o Memory Terms: - 1MB equals 1024KB, thus: -- 128KB equals 0.125MB -- 256KB equals 0.250MB o Mixing of 4MB and 8MB Memory Modules Prohibited All memory modules installed on the processor card of the D40 system or on the 486 DX2 50MHz Processor Card feature installed in earlier GEARBOX models, must be of the same type (4MB or 8MB). The mixing of different memory module types is not permitted on the same processor card. The mixing of 4MB and 8MB modules on a single processor card will result in a system memory error. Support of system memory levels above 16MB, therefore, requires that all modules on the processor card be the 8MB type. o Maximum Memory: GEARBOX Model 800 systems provide five memory module positions on the processor card. One of these positions is for a memory module that is dedicated to providing error correcting code (ECC) capability, and is therefore not available as system memory. This leaves four module positions that are available for system memory. For 7568-D40 systems the total maximum system memory is 32MB. This level requires installation of five of the 8MB memory modules (one for the ECC position and four for system memory). o Available User Memory Limitations Memory available to the user will be less than the total system memory installed on the processor card for several reasons, depending on the level of installed memory and the requirements of installed adapter card features. 1. BIOS Mapping To enhance performance of the GEARBOX Model 800 system, BIOS is moved into system memory during system verification and initialization (SVAI). This requires 128KB of system memory, which results in 128KB less memory available to the user, and applies at all total memory levels. 2. Loss of Split Memory At total memory levels of 16MB or greater an additional 256KB of split memory is lost to the user. This applies only at total memory levels of 16MB or greater. 3. Memory "Gap" Support If an adapter card that is installed requires some system memory below the 16MB level, an additional 2MB of memory will be lost to the user if installed memory levels are 16MB or greater. This will vary based on individual adapters. This loss applies at total memory levels of 16MB or greater. o Summary Available user memory is affected by all three of these reasons, depending on the specifics of a particular system configuration. If five of the 8MB memory modules were installed on the processor card, including one module dedicated to providing ECC, the resulting available user memory could be as follows: 32MB = 32768KB Total system memory - 128KB Required for BIOS (0.125MB) - 256KB Loss of split memory mapping (0.250MB) - 2048KB Memory gap support to adapters (2MB) ------- = 30336KB Net available to the user = 29.625MB Net: Memory available to the user will be up to 2.375MB less than the total system memory. This applies at total memory levels of 16MB or greater, if an installed adapter requires use of the 2MB "gap". Thus system memory versus memory available to the user will be as follows for the various levels of installed memory. TOTAL INSTALLED AVAILABLE SYSTEM MEMORY (MB) USER MEMORY (MB) 4 3.875 8 7.875 12 11.875 16 13.625 minimum 15.625 maximum 24 21.625 minimum 23.625 maximum 32 29.625 minimum 31.625 maximum PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The GEARBOX Model 800 (7568-D40) is designated as a customer setup system. The small computer system interface (SCSI), as defined in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for the attachment of external devices. The 7568-D40 is in conformance with this standard and has an external port. A data security exposure exists since external SCSI controllers can attach through the external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data stored on internal and external SCSI devices. Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must be controlled to limit this exposure. If additional physical security is required for the system, it must be customer supplied (for example, a NEMA enclosure that can be locked or other technique to prevent media removal or SCSI port access). User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
