IBM 7552 INDUSTRIAL COMPUTER Contents Announcement Letter Number 186-185 dated October 7, 1986 US - Last Revised on October 7, 1986 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM 7552 Industrial Computer is designed to meet the reliability, serviceability, and environmental requirements of industrial applications where the computer is an integral part of the plant operation environment. It can be installed in industrial panels such as NEMA enclosures without requiring air conditioning, can be mounted in a 19-inch rack, or can be floor mounted. A Remote Terminal Interface (#6078) permits attachment of the 7552 to an IBM 5531, 7531, or 7532 Industrial Computer, or another 7552. Purchase price: 7552-040, $6770; 7552-140, $9370 Planned General Availability: March 1987 Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Model 040 consists of processor, frame, and power supply. o Model 140 consists of processor, frame, power supply, disk/diskette adapter, and a 10Mb fixed disk. The 7552 integrates the following features and functions: o Industrial packaging (can be installed in industrial panels as well as 19' industrial racks, and floor mounted) o All components pluggable in the frame, including the processor cards, the power supply, and disk/diskette module o Processor cards, memory cards, and feature cards enclosed in shrouds to protect components on the cards while the cards are being handled o Extended environmental specifications o High reliability o Ease of service (malfunction indicators and easy to access pluggable modules) o Orderly shut down in case of power failure (battery back-up on entire system unit) o Orderly start up after a power shutdown or machine malfunction o Display and keyboard not required for system operation o Error detection and recovery o Single-bit error correction and double-bit error detection on all memory (ECC) o Digital outputs to activate external alarms in case of a machine or operation malfunction DESCRIPTION o Model 040: Consists of the frame, the power supply, and the processor, including 512Kb of memory. Seven slots are available for optional features. The available slots are filled with empty card shrouds. o Model 140: Consists of the frame, the power supply, the processor, including 512Kb of memory, a fixed disk/diskette adapter, and one 10Mb fixed disk. Five slots are available for optional features. The available slots are filled with empty card shrouds. The 7552 is based on a high-performance, 16/24 bit, 10 MHz Intel 80286 microprocessor, and 512Kb of memory standard. Up to 3Mb of optional memory can be added. A single disk/diskette module is available on the 7552. It is a pluggable module and occupies two slots in the system unit. Up to two 10Mb Fixed Disk Drives and one 720Kb High-Capacity Diskette Drive can be mounted within the disk/diskette module. The maximum configuration will result in a direct access storage capacity of up to 20.72Mb. The disk/diskette module and one 10Mb fixed disk are standard on the 7552 Model 140. DOS 3.2 supports the 10Mb Fixed Disk Drives and 720Kb High-Capacity Diskette Drive. The 7552 contains seven option (feature) slots that support feature adapters for devices, features, disk, diskette, or memory. Two slots are used in the Model 140 for the disk/diskette module. The 7552 Industrial Computer contains two cooling fans. An optional filter package is available to extend the particulate specification of the 7552. For systems that will be used as workstations, either a floor standing feature (#6098) or a rack mount feature (#6097) can be purchased. The floor standing feature provides all necessary hardware to mount the 7552 in the floor standing position and provision to bolt the system unit to the floor. The rack mount feature provides all necessary hardware to mount the keyboard in a standard 19' rack. The rack and/or panel mount hardware for the system unit is a standard component of the 7552 and is shipped with the system. Features #6097 and #6098 each include a keyboard which offers commonly used data and word processing functions along with separate typewriter and numeric keypads. Key locations, enhancements, and mode indicators (Cap Lock, Numeric Lock, Scroll Lock) improve keyboard usability. Special symbols may be accessed with a combination of keys. Depending on the application program, from 10 to 40 special function keys may be supported. The keyboard is attached to the 7552 via a 12-foot coiled cable, permitting a variety of workspace configurations. An optional Display Mounting Kit (#6025), ordered as a feature of the displays, provides all necessary hardware components to mount the IBM 5532 or 7534 Industrial Graphics Displays in a standard 19-inch rack that is 22 to 30 inches in depth. The 7552 is supported by the IBM Personal Computer DOS 3.2 operating system. The 7552 also supports the following IBM PC software languages. o BASIC Compiler Version 2.0 o 'C' Version 1.0 o Macro Assembler Version 2.0 o PASCAL Version 2.0 (only available on 5.25' diskette) IBM program product 5601-052 provides extensions to these four languages, in the form of subroutine calls, to support the following unique functions of the 7552 that are not a part of other IBM Industrial Computers. o Orderly shut-down following a power failure o Orderly start-up following power-on o Error detection and notifying the application software of the errors o Enabling and disabling the error notification functions o Displaying coded messages on the two character hexadecimal display of the processor o Setting and resetting a digital output point provided by the 7552 for activation of external alarms o Reading the position of the 7552 key-lock switch for system security protection. When the 7552 is configured without diskette, keyboard, or display, an IBM 5531, 7531 or 7532 Industrial Computer or another 7552 configured with a diskette, keyboard, or display is required as a remote terminal to load programs and to provide an operator interface for the 7552. A Remote Terminal Interface (#6078) is required in the 5531, 7531, 7532, or other 7552 to provide an interface to the 7552 through its keyboard port. IBM program product 5601-053 provides program utilities to support the remote terminal interface functions. SPECIAL FEATURES 80287 MATH CO-PROCESSOR (#6070): Adds floating-point math processing capability to the processor. This module is inserted into one of the processor cards. BATTERY (#6072): Provides power to support the system for 10 seconds during a power failure. This will allow the user to program a backup procedure during the power failure. Since the real time clock is powered by this feature, the battery should be a part of configuration for proper operation to prevent the loss of critical data such as the date, the time, and an error log. EXTERNAL VOLTAGE MODULE (#6073): Should be ordered if an external power source will be used for the system unit. This feature is mutually exclusive with the Battery (#6072). MEMORY ADAPTER (#6074): Permits the addition of up to 3Mb of memory. The first 512Kb increment of memory is included with this adapter and five 512Kb Memory Expansions (#6075) can be added, for a total of 3Mb of additional memory. 512K MEMORY EXPANSION (#6075): Each #6075 adds 512Kb of memory to the Memory Adapter (#6074). Maximum: Five. CARD SHROUD (#6076): A card shroud that can be used with any of the processor, memory, or feature cards supported on the 7552. It provides: o Protection for the components on the card while the card is being handled o Positive retention of the card in the frame o An effective path for the air to cool the card. Note: The 7552 is shipped with all empty slots filled with card shrouds. This feature should only be ordered if spare card shrouds are required. IBM PERSONAL COMPUTER FEATURE ADAPTER (#6077): One required for each IBM PC feature adapter to be plugged in the 7552. It provides an interposing card and other hardware to mount the IBM PC feature card in the 7552 card shroud. REMOTE TERMINAL INTERFACE (#6078): An adapter that installs in a 5531, 7531 or 7532 Industrial Computer or another 7552 and provides an interface to connect it to the 7552 through the keyboard port on the 7552. When a 7552 is configured without diskette, keyboard, or display, a 5531, 7531, 7532 or another 7552 configured with a diskette, keyboard and diskette is required as a remote terminal to load programs and to provide an operator interface for the 7552. IBM program product 5601-053 provides program utilities to support the interface functions. A 12-foot cable is included with this feature to connect the 5531, 7531, 7532 or other 7552 to the 7552. Note: #6078 should be ordered against the 7552. Specify #6221 for use in a 5531, #6222 for use in a 7531 or 7532, or #6223 for use in a 7552. DISK/DISKETTE ADAPTER MODULE (#6080): This module allows disk and/or diskette capability on the 7552 Model 040. Included in this module are the fixed disk/diskette adapter card and the fixed disk/diskette shroud. Up to two Fixed Disks (#6082) and one Diskette Drive (#6081) can be installed in the disk/diskette module. The disk/diskette module is a standard feature of the 7552 Model 140. DISKETTE DRIVE (#6081): A 720Kb 3.5-inch diskette drive. On the 7552 Model 040, feature (#6080) is a prerequisite. 10MB FIXED DISK DRIVE (#6082): A 10Mb Fixed Disk Drive. On the 7552 Model 040, feature (#6080) is required. On the Model 140, one 10Mb Fixed Disk Drive is standard. Maximum: Two fixed disk drives per 7552. PROTOTYPE CARD (#6094): A blank card which allows customers to build prototypes of their own adapter cards for the 7552. MEMORY ADAPTER AND CARD SHROUD (#6095): A combination of features #6074 and #6076. The Memory Adapter is installed in the shroud and a label on the front of the shroud identifies the card inside to be the Memory Adapter. FILTERS (#6096): Provides air filtering for the 7552 system unit to extend the particulate specification for environments requiring additional protection. KEYBOARD RACK MOUNT HARDWARE (#6097): A keyboard and the hardware to mount the keyboard in a standard 19-inch rack. FLOOR MOUNT KIT (#6098): A keyboard and the hardware to mount the 7552 in the floor mount position with provision to bolt the system unit to the floor. PREREQUISITES: If the 7552 does not have a diskette, a display, or keyboard, a 5531, 7531, or 7532 Industrial Computer or another 7552 with a diskette, display and keyboard must be connected to the 7552 via a Remote Terminal Interface (#6078) for initial program load and diagnostics. The interface (#6078) installs in the 5531, 7531 or 7532 or other 7552. Any special feature adapter, except the Memory Adapter (#6074) or Memory Adapter and Card Shroud (#6095), requires an IBM Personal Computer Feature Adapter (#6077). PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY: The customer is responsible for unpacking and installing system components and options in accordance with the installation instructions provided. INSTALLABILITY: The keyboard is directly pluggable into the system unit. Once turned on, the system unit automatically runs a system verification and initialization test to verify system readiness. If a failure is found, a code will appear in the alphanumeric display on the processor. The code displayed corresponds to the type of failure that is detected during self test operation. If the test is successfully completed, the system will load the operating system from the fixed disk, diskette, or attached 5531, 7531, or 7532, or another properly configured 7552. SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities. If sensitive data is sent over external communication facilities, user management may wish to pursue the application of cryptography. TERMS, CONDITIONS, AND CHARGES TERMS AND CONDITIONS PRODUCT AVAILABILITY STATUS: New product available CUSTOMER SET-UP: The 7552 is a customer set-up (CSU) machine. The CSU allowance is one day. IBM set up is available from the IBM National Service Division at hourly rates and minimums. ELIGIBLE MACHINE UNDER ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION FOR IBM MACHINES: No IBM HOURLY SERVICE RATE CLASSIFICATION: 2 EDUCATIONAL ALLOWANCE: A 20% educational allowance is available to qualifying institutions in accordance with the Educational Allowance Amendment. The educational allowance is not additive to any other discount or allowance. CENTRAL FACILITY MAINTENANCE SERVICE: Yes, the minimum number of machines required to be at the central facility before requesting maintenance service is one machine. PRE-INSTALLATION TEST ALLOWANCE: None ON-SITE ALLOWANCE: None MACHINE GROUP: A WARRANTY PERIOD: The warranty period is one year for the 7552 and all optional features except the Prototype Adapter (#6094) which is one year, unless the feature is altered, at which time warranty provisions are terminated. Note: Customers should be aware of the termination of warranty for the Prototype Adapter when it is altered. TYPE OF SERVICE: IBM On-Site Repair (IOR) MAINTENANCE SERVICE: IBM will provide on-site maintenance service for the failing machines. In certain industrial environments the customer may be required to sign the Amendment for Central Facility Maintenance Service (Z125-3333-02). The customer must ensure that the system unit is unlocked when presented for service. If the 7552 configuration does not include keyboard, display, or diskette, the customer must have a 5531, 7531, 7532 or 7552 Industrial Computer, configured with display, keyboard, and diskette, and a Remote Terminal Interface (#6078) available for use by the IBM service personnel. Note: Customers should be aware of their specific responsibilities as they relate to Central Facility Maintenance Service.
