Abstract The new IBM 7546 Industrial Computer Model 511 offers outstanding performance and configuration flexibility in a Micro Channel(R) system designed to enhance the IBM industrial computer product line at very attractive prices. The new model offers increased processor performance and upgradeability, external cache memory, improved graphics performance, Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory support, and large storage capacity, in a common industrial mechanical package providing up to five available expansion slots and four storage device bays (three of the four bays are available for expansion). In addition, a new industrial keyboard with TrackPoint II(TM) is now supported on the IBM 7546 line. The Model 511 includes a choice of the Intel**DX4-100MHz or Intel486DX2-66MHz processors. A zero insertion force (ZIF) socket is included, providing for processor upgradeability, including future Intel Pentium** OverDrive** processor and future Intel486 OverDrive processor upgrades. The DX2-66MHz processor is a full 32-bit processor operating at an internal clock speed of 66MHz and at an external clock speed of 33MHz. The processor contains 8KB of internal cache memory and has an integrated floating-point processor unit. The DX2-66MHz processor system comes with 128KB of external (level 2) Write Thru cache memory installed. The DX4-100MHz processor is a full 32-bit processor operating at an internal clock speed of 100MHz and at an external clock speed of 33MHz. The processor contains 16KB of internal cache memory and has an integrated floating-point processor unit. The DX4-100MHz processor system comes with 256KB of external (level 2) Write Thru cache memory installed. The new model ships with 8MB of 70-ns parity or ECC memory and can be expanded to a maximum of 64MB of memory. Choose from either Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) or Small Computer System Interface (SCSI)-2 DASD controllers (controller adapter needed for SCSI-2 -- requires expansion slot). Faster and larger hard disk drives are supported for both IDE and SCSI-2 controllers. SCSI-2 supports larger hard disk drives than IDE at this time. A maximum of two IDE hard drives and seven SCSI-2 devices (three internal to the system) is supported. The new model of the IBM 7546 is shipped with no hard disk drives installed by IBM. Many different hard drive options are available for ordering, all for installation by the customer. Refer to the list of available hard disk drive options. Video is provided via the S3-VGA chip set designed to meet the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) requirements. The enhanced local bus graphics provide hardware compatibility with VGA, equivalent performance to XGA(R)-2 with the standard 1MB of video memory, and additional resolution, refresh rate, and colors with an additional 1MB video memory option. Of course the new model continues to offer a choice of standard or battery-backup-capable power supply, and still provides for bench or rack mounting. Also announced today are new optional features that may be ordered for the new Model 511 or, in many cases, for earlier models of the IBM 7546 Industrial Computer. Most important of all, the IBM 7546 continues to provide for reliable performance in extended environments and other mission-critical applications. The display power management capability of the new IBM 7546 products requires that the attached display is power manageable and conforms to the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) Display Power Management Signaling (DPMS) interface. Of the listed industrial displays, only the IBM 7574 provides this capability. Software Requirements: Operating system software must be provided for the IBM 7546 Industrial Computer. The following levels of IBM operating system products are compatible with the new model of the IBM 7546 Industrial Computer: IBM DOS 5.02 PC DOS 6.1 PC DOS 6.3 OS/2(R) SE and EE 1.30.1 (with CSD 5016) OS/2 SE and EE 1.30.2 (with CSD 5050) OS/2 2.1 OS/2 2.11 AIX(R) PS/2(R) 1.3.0 Display Power Management: If a power manageable display is attached to the system, and the display conforms to the VESA DPMS interface, then using the Advanced Power Management (APM) driver will save power. The APM driver does this by instructing the display to go into various power saving states after a period of inactivity has been detected. APM will put the power manageable display into one of three different states: Standby: Minimum power savings but immediate return to ON (default activated after 15 minutes) Suspend: Medium power savings but medium return to ON (default activated after 30 minutes) Off: Maximum power savings but noticeable delay in return to ON (default activated after 60 minutes) The timeout defaults can be changed from 1 to 99 minutes. DPMS for DOS/Windows(1): Support is shipped with the system in the Enhanced Local Bus Device Driver package. The installation program provides the option to install the feature. (1) Trademark of Microsoft Corporation DPMS for OS/2: Support for OS/2 is available and the package may be obtained from: IBM PC Company BBs -- 919-517-0001 TalkLink CompuServe Information Service Compatibility: The system contains licensed system programs, set configuration and features, test, copy an option diskette, backup/restore, and update system program. These system programs are provided on the IBM reference diskette, to be loaded onto a hard disk drive that is installed in the system. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the features of the system and to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the IBM Personal Computer XT(TM), the IBM Personal Computer AT(R), and the IBM Personal System/2(R) family. BIOS Flash update capability allows BIOS at the hardware level to be changed without replacing the hardware components. Limitations: Refer to the Software Requirements section for operating systems limitations. The new model of the IBM 7546 supports only 4MB, 8MB, and 16MB 70-nanosecond single in-line memory modules (SIMMs), of both parity and ECC memory types. The maximum addressable memory space is 64MB. The system reserves 128KB of memory when BIOS/POST is copied to Random Access Memory (RAM). For systems with 16MB or more of planar memory, split memory addressing is disabled. The IDE controller supports up to two IDE hard disk drives. The optional SCSI-2 controller supports up to seven SCSI devices (three devices internal to the system). The IBM 7546 has four available internal bays for DASD devices, as noted in the list of supported DASD features. Two of the four bays are accessible for removable-media devices. When the 205 W power supply is installed with the optional backup battery in place, the maximum number of DASD devices that can be installed internally is reduced to three. This is because the battery is located in a bay that could otherwise accept a DASD device. Two of the three bays remaining with the battery installed are accessible for removable-media devices. Installation of 400MB or larger hard disk drives is restricted to the lower two center DASD bays in the system. These devices may not be installed in the upper right bay position. The maximum 50(degs)C operating temperature will be reduced when specific devices are attached to or installed in the system. Refer to the Operating Environment section. The system is intended to be operated in a horizontal position. While the system will operate in a vertical position (left or right side down), no standard mounting capability is provided for this orientation. The user is responsible for providing appropriate means if vertical orientation is desired. The licensed system programs include BIOS, set configuration and features, copy an option diskette, test, backup/restore, and update system program. These programs are licensed under the terms and conditions of the IBM System Program License Agreement. A copy of this agreement is included in the documentation that ships with the system. These licensed system programs are provided on the IBM system reference diskette, to be loaded onto a hard disk drive that is installed in the system. Approximately six million bytes are required for this code on the hard disk drive. The formatted capacity is therefore reduced by six million bytes and the total user-accessible capacity may vary slightly based on operating environments. Display adapter cards that use the Auxiliary Video Extension, when installed in a system, require installation in slot 2 and attachment of a display to the system video connector during configuration of the system. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) SCSI specification for the total SCSI cable length connected to a SCSI interface is six meters (approximately 19.7 ft) maximum. The length of the SCSI cable inside the system is one meter. Therefore, the total length of all SCSI cables for external devices that operate from the external SCSI connector may not exceed a maximum of five meters (approximately 16.5 ft), including the cables inside each SCSI device. The following Micro Channel adapters, options, and cables are NOT supported on the new models: IBM PS/2 8514 Display Adapter/A (feature code (FC) 4054, part number (P/N) 1887972) IBM PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter (FC 1005, P/N 6451109) IBM PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter with Cache (FC 1018, P/N 6451110) IBM Mwave(TM) WindSurfer(TM) Communication Adapter/A (FC 7058, P/N 82G7058) Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: The IBM 7546 Industrial Computer is designated as customer setup. Setup instructions are shipped with the system. Cable Orders: Cables are required for system power, keyboard, and display connections. Cables are provided with the system unit and display, and the instructions are provided as part of the initial setup. If SCSI devices are to be installed in the system, additional SCSI cables may be required. Installability: The IBM 7546 requires about 30 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other adapters, an operating system, and other features, and for installing the system in a customer-provided rack if applicable. The new 7546 Model 511 is shipped with a bench-mount front cover. If 19-inch rack mounting is desired, FC 6032, Rack Mount Plate Assembly, must be ordered and installed. Installation of the rack-mount configuration of the IBM 7546 in a standard 19-inch rack also requires that support be provided for the system in addition to the front cover attachment. Necessary hardware may be ordered from the rack supplier, or the following available features may be ordered from IBM: FC 6771, Brackets for Rack Mount Slides FC 6023, Rack Mounting Slides In addition, if provision is desired for rack mounting the keyboard, the Keyboard Mounting Kit (FC 6024) may be ordered. This kit also requires that the Rack Mounting Slides (FC 6023) be ordered. The Multitype Keyboard Rack Mount Drawer (FC 6908) is also available for rack mounting of a keyboard. FC 6908 permits the drawer to be closed without rotating the space saving 84-key keyboard from the normal use position, however no drawer lock is provided. FC 6024 requires that all keyboards be rotated 90 degrees before the drawer can be closed, but does provide a lock for the drawer. The system is intended to be operated in a horizontal position. While the system will operate in a vertical position (left or right side down), no standard mounting capability is provided for this orientation. The user is responsible to provide appropriate means if vertical orientation is desired. Installation of hard disk drives requires that FC 0261, IBM PS/2 Desktop HDD Kit, also be ordered and used. Each kit provides hardware for mounting up to three hard disk drives in a 7546 system. In addition, SCSI device installation may require ordering of applicable cable features. Problem Determination: After installation, the customer should run the system-level diagnostic routine as described and provided with the system, and proceed as directed. Additional diagnostic and defective part isolation assistance is available in the Hardware Maintenance Library, which may be purchased separately.
