IBM 7541, 7542, 7561, AND 7562 INDUSTRIAL COMPUTER ENHANCEMENTS Contents Announcement Letter Number 190-158 dated September 18, 1990 US - Last Revised on September 18, 1990 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM Industrial Computer family has been enhanced with the addition of several features to further expand IBM's presence in the industrial environment. These enhancements include memory expansion features for the 7561 and 7562; battery-backed power supply features for the 7541, 7542, 7561, and 7562; and a diskette-access locking door for the bench-top 7541 and 7561. The memory expansion features for the 7561 and 7562 are: o Enhanced 80386 Memory Expansion Option, 2MB Kit o Enhanced 80386 Memory Expansion Option, 4MB Kit o 4MB Memory Module Kit Planned Availability Date: October 26, 1990. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o The memory options for the 7561 and 7562 Industrial Computers have been enhanced to provide increased flexibility and upgradeability, thus protecting the customer's current investment. o The 7561 and 7562 memory options also provide growth and expandability by the use of IBM's 4-megabyte (4MB) memory technology. o Reliability and availability of the 7541, 7542, 7561, and 7562 have been further increased with the introduction of the 180-Watt Battery-Backed Power Supply feature. o Access control has been improved on the 7541 and 7561 bench-top units with the addition of a (standard) locking diskette-access door. DESCRIPTION INVESTMENT PROTECTION The IBM 7541, 7542, 7561, and 7562 Industrial Computer offerings have been enhanced to take advantage of the customer's current investment in an industrial plant-floor environment where harsh physical conditions may exist. The reliability and availability of these Industrial Computers have been further improved with the availability of an optional 180-Watt autoranging, worldwide power supply. This power supply allows continuous operation through brief main-power interruptions (nominal default of 10 seconds), providing increased availability and minimizing down time. Memory options for the 7561 and 7562 Industrial Computers have been refreshed to take advantage of IBM's new 4MB memory technology, providing increased performance and customer flexibility. These new 80386 Memory Expansion Options are available with either 2MB or 4MB of memory (standard) and support up to three additional memory kits in any combination -- that is, any combination of the 1MB, 2MB, and/or the new 4MB Memory Module Kits -- giving customers the flexibility to configure their systems according to application requirements. The 7541 and 7561 Bench Top Industrial Computers will now come standard with a locking diskette-access door that prevents the insertion or removal of diskettes, thus providing limited access and increased auditability of the system. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The availability of the new 4MB memory technology and the 2MB and 4MB Enhanced Memory Options provides customers with flexibility in satisfying their 7561 and 7562 Industrial Computer memory requirements. Customers now have additional options for increasing the system memory -- through planar memory, adapter memory, or some combination of the two -- to meet specific application needs. Also, with the addition of the new 180-Watt Battery-Backed Power Supply feature, the 7541, 7542, 7561, and 7562 Industrial Computers can be used in applications where minimal down time and data integrity are required. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS With these new features, the 7541, 7542, 7561, and 7562 Industrial Computers offer many advantages to the customer. These advantages include increased memory capacity and functionality on a single adapter for the 7561 and 7562 Industrial Computers, allowing customers to implement other applications such as maintenance, inventory control, quality control, and process monitoring. The optional 180-Watt worldwide, autoranging, battery-backed power supply available in the 7541, 7542, 7561, and 7562 Industrial Computers increases the reliability and improves the availability of the system by providing continuous operation through brief main-power interruptions (nominal default of 10 seconds). PUBLICATIONS Each feature is shipped with its own part-numbered set of installation instructions. The following product publications will be updated to reflect the addition of these new features and will be available for ordering by October 26, 1990: o 7541 Installation and Operation Guide (S15F-8645) o 7541 Hardware Maintenance Library (S15F-8646) o 7542 Installation and Operation Guide (S33F-4412) o 7542 Hardware Maintenance Library (Supplement) (S33F-4777) o 7541/7542 Technical Reference (Supplement) (S15F-8667) o 7561 Installation and Operation Guide (S16F-2142) o 7561 Hardware Maintenance Library (S16F-2146) o 7562 Installation and Operation Guide (S33F-3843) o 7562 Hardware Maintenance Library (Supplement) (S33F-3846) o 7561/7562 Technical Reference (Supplement) (S16F-2150) EDUCATION SUPPORT Education is planned for this product.
